Question

Windows Server 2003 Share without Login Prompt

Asked by: bick2000

Hi!

All I'm trying to do is create a share on my server that does not need a login. I'm assuming I can do this by granting "ANONYMOUS LOGIN" permissions, but that has not worked. Whenever I try to access the computer \\server I still get a log in prompt. (Even if i try to access the share \\server\share it asks for login information.

Any ideas on how I can grant anonymous access to a file share?

Thanks in advance!

MS has disabled Anonymous access in this version of Windows. Anonymous access was allowed in Windows NT and 2000. You need to set policy setting using gpedit.msc to enable thia access on server or domain controllers:

Go to gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options, In right pane edit the following policy setting:

Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users, and then click Properties.

On domain controllers you need to use *Domain Controllers Security Policy* snap-in to enable this access as long as Domain Controller computer account is in "Domain Controllers" OU.

Microsoft has modified share permissions in this version of Windows. The default permissions has been changed to give users only *Read* permission. If users are still unable to access share then modify permissions:

Allow Everyone : Full Control in Share permission.

then change NTFS permissions accordingly or add Everyone Group on Security tab for NTFS permissions.

Thanks for the quick response.

I went and edited that policy setting in group policy and ran gpupdate, and added the Everyone group with full share (and NTFS) permissions, but I'm still getting a login prompt.

I have been reading around that maybe it has something to do with the guest account? I don't know. i've added the guest account (and enabled it) but that hasn't seemed to work either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

If users are not able to access shared resources on this server using UNC and get user name and password dialouge box and can access only when you make them member of Administrator group then probably you have Administrators group account listed in the following security setting:

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User rights assignment

Policy setting is:

"Access this computer from the network"   >> Everyone group or Users group or Authenticated users group must be there in.

Also make sure "Deny access this computer from the network" policy setting is not configured. Deny settings override allow!

Let us know.

Apart from allowing anonymous access, you need to enable it as a Null Session Share; the article below is just for further reference (or older machines), in Server 2003, you can define this in a security policy under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options, "Network Access: Allow anonymous access to these shares"; add the share name there.

>>>"Network Access: Allow anonymous access to these shares"

Could you please tell me where should I look for this policy setting in my version of Windows 2003 with SP1 I'm running?

by: oBdAPosted on 2005-11-20 at 04:34:59ID: 15328871

Try "Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously".

Group policy->local policy->Security Options->"Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous Users" (enable)

by: bick2000Posted on 2005-11-21 at 09:25:28ID: 15335415

Ok, I have tried those now, and still nothing.

I have changed the "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" property to enable.

I have added the share "SHARE" to "Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously".

I added "Everyone" full access permissions to the share and also NTFS

And Everyone is allowed to access the server over the network.

But I'm still getting a login UI prompt. :/ Sorry for not getting it yet. there's go to be something im missing. I'll keep looking it over.

Any suggestions are much welcome. I've also raised it to 500 points.

Thanks again!

Is this a domain controller or stand-alone server?

by: oBdAPosted on 2005-11-21 at 12:32:18ID: 15336880

One more thing that might be in the way: "Network Access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares"; set this to Disabled.

by: SystmProgPosted on 2005-11-21 at 12:48:50ID: 15337005

If this is a domain controller then all policy settings explained here must be set using Domain Security Policy or Default Domain Security Policy GPO.

Just to finalize this question for those who are trying to do this. Enable the Guest account, Do the Solution and assisted solution and Disable "Network Access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares";

that did the trick for me.  Remember that your Windows 2003 machine is now less secure and might be open to hacker or malware.

Thank you!

well here is a link that have solved this issue for me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9HPE6RPRrg

BUT,

I need to mention that using a  share without a user name and password (NULL) share is a big security hole.

Anyways, I needed that NULL share to test MDT for the new windows 7 deployment project (test lab, virtual machines). and I needed it in the first place because of a bug in one of the MDT 2010 scripts (ztiutility.vbs) and the good version is here

http://deployment.xtremeconsulting.com/2009/11/13/ztiutility-vbs-updated-version/

BUT, be aware not to use a domain-joined computer to try to connect to a share without a user name and password prompt , as you will get an error saying (no domain controllers available to verify your identity) or something like that.

also, the link for enabling the NULL share have been tried on a stand alone server and not a domain member.

thank you for your time,

by: Smart_ManPosted on 2010-07-22 at 13:02:07ID: 33268384

oh i forgot to mention, sometimes you get an error message saying ( your secuirty is beeing compromised) or somthing like that.. it means that the null share you are trying to connect is trying to verify your identity ..

and you system is not expecting that.

thank you for yoru time,
