The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. active directory - slow AD and group membership problem - 500pts

Hi,

Here is how my AD is setup :

Server 1 : Dual P3 500 with 500mbRAM, Windows 2003 srvr. This is my primary DC, GC, dns,wins,dhcp, and file server
Server 2 : Dual P3 550 with 1gbRAM, Windows 2003 srvr. This is a secondary DC, GC with exchange 2003
Server 3 : Dual P3 500 with 500mbRAM, windows 2000 srvr. This is a secondary DC, GC, dns,wins,dhcp, and proxy
I have other servers but they are not related to the issue issue ...

This problem started last week as an exchange problem. Users had problems opening outlook, because it said that the server was unavailable. when pressing RETRY a few times, it worked fine. after a RPCDIAG, it seemed that the directory access is what made it freeze.

Now when users open session, there is a login script that is checking group memberships in the AD and it is mapping shares as they have access or not. Now it seems incredibly slow to run when it it lookin in the AD. It used to take 10 seconds for the whole script, now it takes over 60 seconds, and it sometimes skips some groups as if it did not find them.

I demoted an old NT4 file server a few weeks ago, and did not see any problems at the time. this might be related so I mention it here.
Also I saw some minor problems in the DNS (external dns servers had some issues .. .ISP problems, this did not affect any internal .. I just removed the DNS forwarders and it worked OK)

any idea why my AD is acting all weird all of a sudden ???
