VPN - help!

As a result of Hurricane Katrina, we are changing our office setup (file access and backup). As I am kind of new to this stuff, I really need some help (step by step, if possible).

This is what I have done:
I have setup Small Business Server 2003 as a file server/exchange server. We have purchased laptops for our employees with the thought that they could work away from the regular office (we are in our 3rd temporary space).

This is what I would like to do:
I would like to set up VPN connections so they could work from home or somewhere else and connect to the SMS2003 machine to access their files. This way the files would be on the central server.
Our network runs through a linksys wireless router with firewall activated. The SBS2003 server is acting as the DHCP provider through a single TCPIP connection.

I believe this is what I need to know:
Do I set up the VPN through the router or through the SBS2003 server?
If through the router, how do I get to the server?
If through the server, how do I get through the router?

I am sure that there is more that I need to do and I would appreciate any help you could offer to make this work.
