Question

Unable to ping gateway or outside ip addresses from one server

Asked by: bbmorey

On one of our Windows 2003 servers we are unable to ping the gateway or any external ip addresses.   There is only one NIC in the machine and it uses all internal addresses.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Check the TCP/IP settings. Have you configured the IP Address, Subnet Mask and the default gateway correct? The IP address and the Default gateway should be on the same subnet. To know that wether your IP address and the Default Gateway are on the same network or not, do and AND function for both IP addresses and the Subnet Mask you are using on the server. If both results are same, then they are, otherwise not.

If TCP/IP settings are fine, check by pinging to another host on the same network. Then by pinging from another host to the default gateway. Check the connectivity of your server and the gateway.

The TCP/IP settings are fine they are all on the same subnet and the gateway is correct.   As far as pinging, the server with the problem can ping any internal address including the workstations, servers, printers just not the gateway or external ip addresses.  The other servers can ping the gateway and external addresses.   All the server use the same gateway of 10.10.10.21  I am thinking the routing table is corrupted

thanks
Brett

Could you post the output of

route print

e.g. route print > C:\route.txt

With this information we can check if your routing table is correct.

Are you running any firewall software on this machine for instance Microsoft ISA Server ?

by: ImranHashimPosted on 2006-03-14 at 07:01:23ID: 16183956

I suspect the problem is the subnet mask. Can you give the subnet mask and the IP you are using for this server.

by: bbmoreyPosted on 2006-03-14 at 08:14:09ID: 16184800

I wont be able to post the output of route.txt until tomorrow.  No we arent running any firewall programs.   This system has been up since summer, not sure what happened to it.

On this server the setup of the ip is:

        10.10.10.1
        255.255.0.0
        10.10.10.21

       DNS 10.10.10.1
              10.10.10.3

Is the server connected to a switch with VLANs?  Did it get tossed into the wrong VLAN?

by: bbmoreyPosted on 2006-03-14 at 16:16:39ID: 16189802

It is on a switch with VLANS, but I dont believe it is in the wrong VLAN.  The other 4 servers on the 10.10.10.x lan are able to ping this server and this server is able to ping the other servers.  This server is also able to ping and get to any internal address, it just cant get to the gateway address or any external address.

by: bbmoreyPosted on 2006-03-14 at 16:17:43ID: 16189811

I still think it is a routing issue, but remote access to the server is down and I wont be back to the client until the end of the week.

Looks like a normal route print to me...that's pretty basic.

What is 10.10.10.21?  Is it a L3 switch or a router or a Proxy server or what?

by: bbmoreyPosted on 2006-03-15 at 07:55:58ID: 16195219

The 10.10.10.21 is a SOnicwall Pro 3060.

I solved the problem last night.   The ARP table on the sonicwall was messed up, I flushed it and everything worked correctly.

Thanks for the help.
