Question

Really stange behavior on Windows 2003 server

Asked by: dlo32

Would like some ideas on the following behavior with a 2003 server.  Here is what is currently installed on it:

All 2003 service pack/unpdates
SQL
Track-It 6.5
Adaware
Symantec Corp Ed. 9.0

Here is what I am experienceing:
Unable to view events in the Application, security, and system logs within event viewer.  When clicking on an event nothing happens.  No message, no new windows.
Unable to do a search from the start menu.  Openning search does nothing.
When looking at the properties of "my network places" nothing is listed.  The window is blank.
When access local users/groups are in mmc I cannot open any groups to add/remove users and I can not open any locally listed users.  Nothing happens when I click on them.

It almost seems like someone may have messed with permissions maybe but I have tried other admin logins (both 2003 local admin and another domain admin)  However I do not get an access denide message anywhere.  Some of the error messges in the event logs are a COM 10022 error which is listed constantly in the app. log.  I've run adware and SYmantec...no issue there.

Nope.  Same thing.

On that second link, read it thoroughly before going through it.  I've seen it work like a charm and I've seen it do nothing before...so don't get too hopeful.

Let us know!

I did steps 1-4 howerver...I can't make any changes to permissions in the gpedit.  I can see that the everyone account has the Bybass traverse checking but I can't open it to add/remove anyone else.  No lUck so far.

by: TheCleanerPosted on 2006-03-15 at 09:19:36ID: 16196269

Everyone group will work for "bypass traverse checking" part...nobody else needs to really be added/removed.

If you've done the other steps then that should do it, the GPedit part is simply to change the bypass traverse checking, but it's already set ok.

Did you then run these 2 commands?:

echo y| cacls %windir%\registration /G everyone:R system:F administrators:F
echo y| cacls %windir%\registration\*.clb /G everyone:R system:F administrators:F

per the document?

If that doesn't work, the next step would be to get back to a "baseline" by removing adaware and symantec.  I wouldn't yet deal with getting rid of SQL or Trackit yet, as those are a pain to set back up...

by: dlo32Posted on 2006-03-15 at 10:14:24ID: 16196801

Yep I tried that.  Didn't work either.  I actually think it has something to do with Trackit and IIS.  It stopped functioning back in July which is around the same time that Trackit was installed (by a remote user at a sister site of mine).

by: TheCleanerPosted on 2006-03-15 at 10:33:54ID: 16197003

Well, I'm running Trackit 6.5 on a 2003 server too, and no problems, actually getting ready to update it to 7.0

IF the server is just a member server running 2003 and track-it is its only real role, then I would suggest checking Numara's website (they own it now), and see how to do a backup and restore.  Then you could wipe the 2003 server, and just load up Trackit again.

Troubleshoot it further if you want of course, but you may work on this for days and not get a resolution.

P.S.  I would also consider reinstalling SP1 just to see if that helps.

The issue appears to have been with Trackit 6.5 and a the service pack 1 for Windows server 2003.  After removing the service pack I was able to open items within the event log.  I then reinstalled the service pack my issue came back.  Guess I'll just live with it for now.

Interesting, I'll have to look closer at our install...since everything seems to be ok here...
