Question

Can't Add another DC to my domain

When I try to promote the machine to a DC I get the following error, any ideas ?

The operation failed because: Active Directory could not configure the computer account Server1$ on the remote domain controller Server2.ssr.local.  "Access is denied."

Please specifiy an account with enterprise administrator privlidges to the domain.


Any ideas on how to fix this.. I am using the administrator account and It says its part of the entreprise admin group

can you check what other groups this user name is a part of , it should definitely not include any guest groups.
alternately there is a dcpromo log and a dcpromoui.log created on the promotion failed server you could chk that.

Try creating a new account and give it Enterprise Admin rights.  With this new administrator account, attempt to dcpromo the new DC onto the domain.

I created an account gave it enterprise admin rights and still no go ...  I get the same error if I try to remove a dc...

Try to put Domain Name\administrator & then Password

Download and install the Server 2003 support tools.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892777

Then run dcdiag and netdiag.  Post the results here, that should tell us more.

Should I install those on the machine I want to be the DC ?

check dns settings as well...you should only be pointing to the current DC....is this r2 server? have you re run the approp preps?

No it is not an R2 server and Yes the dns is pointing to the correct location

everything passed on the tests - I did one group policy failure.. could that be affecting it ?

The error I am getting is after running dcpromo.. I get a pop up box that has the title of "New Credentials"  and the error in the box says

" The operation failed because: The Active Directory Installation Wizard was unable to covert the computer account TEMPDC$ to a domain controller account.  "Access is denied"  

Then below the box it says ...

"Type the suer name and password of an account with suffcient privleges to create an additional domain controller fot the ssr.local domain ...

any ideas ?

I think I fixed it.. I stopped the netlogon service before promotion .. I think that may have done it..
