*** Windows Server 2003 TA Experts Notification Thread ***

*** Experts ONLY ***

Welcome to the Windows Server 2003 topic area notification thread. This is a similar question to the one posted by the Exchange TA Page Editor Sembee.

The idea of this question is for experts & page editors to post links to questions that need attention from other experts.

This could include:

- Questions that have been moved in to this topic area from another one
- Questions in other topic areas that could do with input from an Exchange server expert
- Questions where the expert has run out of ideas, requires a fresh pair of eyes or would just like support from another expert.

*** How does it work? ***

This question is based on those already operating in other topic areas.

You may want to setup a rule in Outlook to flag messages from this question separately from your regular questions.

If you have a question that you would like looking at, post a link to the question plus any other information that could be of use to someone reading this question.

I will monitor the questions posted, and when they have been closed with the problem resolved, I will delete the link in this question. This should keep the question tidy so that you only see questions that are "live".

Eventually this question will become the last open question in the list, making it easy to find.

If there is a question that you think I need to look at as Page Editor, then please let me know via  email: Jay_Jay70 @ experts-exchange.com

*** QUESTION ASKERS PLEASE NOTE ***

Please do not post a link to your own question in to this area unless the question is at least 72 hours old. Anything newer will be deleted WITHOUT NOTICE.
This is not a replacement for the pointer system, and you should use that where possible.

Rubbish. I get too used to writing my own tools that I have a bad tendancy to disregard all the standard ones ;)

Can anyone help here?

I am running out of options and am resorting to event id links! :O

Any scripters here?

New accounts created with this script apear in the OWA GAL, but not Outlook - the kicker here is that accounts created normally function fine

Hope you don't mind if I crash the "Notification Thread" party. I was going to wait until I'd earned a master certificate, but I've just wasted half my working day on another question in the IIS TA and I could really do with some help now on this one:

Although I think buses are more a cause of fear in London. Perhaps that's just because I cycle to work.

Can someone else take a look at this question.

Hey guys,

This one is quite complex (or probably dead simple if you know the exact answer). Netman, Sembee or oBdA perhaps*?

Chris

*I just have a high opinion of you three ;)
Eyes down everyone... Microsoft booted SP2 out the door a couple of hours ago.

If you want it now... the download servers are coming in very quickly... probably be announced shortly.

It is also on WSUS, and Windows Update.

280mb download for x86 and 250 for x64 - the x64 also covers Windows XP 64 bit edition.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sp2.mspx

Strongly suggest the release notes...
Particularly the bit about Internet Explorer 7 being removed before installing the service pack.

Have fun!

Simon.
Fantatsic, thanks for the heads up!
Jay or Jeff (TechsoEasy) can you look at this Q it is in the wrong TA.

Andrew,

The Q has been placed in both SBS and 2003 Server zones....no idea why the zone assignment also has printers but hey :)

Jay is on holidays (unless he is back already), so I changed it in lieu.

Real life holidays as well, before he even came off probation at his new job, and in the middle of a total network redesign (that he should be managing) *rolls eyes*

i reckon so too... he's not supposed to have holidays! he's meant to permanently cover for me being a lazy so and so isn't he? :)

If someone could pitch in, it would be great.

Could someone please assist, this was posted to MS Site Server.  I've moved it into Windows 2003 Server but it's pretty old so it's going to be way down the list.  500 points:

Also, I could use some batch file or scripting advice on this post. Writing script was never my cup of tea. The author is trying to log on automatically with a script. He is using RD and logging onto the machine while setting at the machine is not possible. Is there a script that can log you onto the machine automatically after a reboot?

No such thing as a stooge here mate - welcome
Thanks Jay Jay:
I see this post has drawn some of the finest folks.

Anyone wish to help with a pesky security patch download?

The author is trying to update the computer and was downloading a patch for netframework 2.
 see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928365

I found out the author had Netframework 3 when trying to install. "UNABLE TO UPDATE CERTAIN FILES"  is the error for this patch. I believe this is because Netframework had a newer version than the patch was designed for. So, the patch didn't install correctly. Now, it sounds like the patch is continuously trying to install and coming up with a pesky error.

I have taken the troubleshooting as far as I can. Now, I can use a second tech with me for the best fix.

The author is very responsive!

Here's the post:

Scripting was never my cup of tea. Can someone help with a script to map printers. The user is getting access denied when trying to get the script to work. I think this would be an easy project for a script writer.

I accidentally stepped into a post I am not up to speed on. The author is using a VPN tunnel to get DHCP. He was wondering why he receives DHCP, at every  LAN site the client goes to. He is using Watchgaurd firewall.

I am thinking the IPsec protocols for a VPN tunnel are not IP relyant. But, I don't know how to put that into words.

That was the basis of his question. Why do I get DHCP everywhere I go with my client?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/22990851/DHCP-Remote-location-problems.html

This will go deep into networking and VPN tunneling. Any help would be appreciated.
Hello Simon (Sambee)/ALL:

Simon, you were working on a Outlook express client problem that is similar to a problem I am running into.
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21708747/Force-Outlook-2003-to-use-RPC-over-HTTP-on-a-Lan.html

I am working on a similar problem. On this author's problem, Outlook 2003 and 2007 seems to be creating its own network connection. I read Outlook will go to the DNS server that hosts the mail server. When this happens, the off-site mail server doesn't have a DNS record on the local DNS server. So, Outlook seems to be dynamically overwriting the DNS cached entries on the client computer to a DNS server that hosts the off-site mail server.

The only problem is the new connection overwrites the cached DNS record of the local DNS server. IPconfig /flushdns, deleting arpcache, and NBTSTAT -RR temporarily fixes the problem. All temp fixes remove the cached DNS record, right?

With the change in the cached DNS record, now the clients seem to be going to a remote DNS server(therefore, bypassing the local DNS server) and they loose LAN shares and other DNS related issues.

I don't want to lead the author astray with bad advice. I am thinking a local DNS setting for the offsite mail server is necessary. Then the local DNS server will have a record and Outlook will not overwrite the cached DNS server's pointer.

Will you provide advise on this issue?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23034442/help-diagnose-Network-gremlins.html
Guys,
i have posted a q that while being SBS i dont think that is the problem. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyone have a fix, rather than a work around?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23293545/Recieve-windows-cannot-access-the-specified-device-path-or-file-as-the-administrator-and-owner.html

On this post, I have a person that has a file server. He is trying to access the file server through mapped network drives. He can not access .EXE, .MSI, .REG ... through a """remote""" site due to Internet explorer security settings.

I I have never seen the error personally, so I haven't figured out a fix.

A work around is described in this article.
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650

You have to enter the domain in as a trusted site to access these files. What a pain.

I was thinking of a GPO that can add the domain as a trusted site. Is there a Internet explorer option to recognize the INTRANET?

Hey Chris:

Thanks for your help on that last one.

Anyone ready for a DNS question? I see you have done this before Chris.

There are two copies of the Reverse lookup zone in AD, causing 4515 error and the person is now in Journal wrap as a result. Microsoft recommends using the ADSI utility to remove forward lookup zones, but does not mention reverse lookup zones.

I am not proficient enough with the ADSI utility to do this verbatum.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23779315/Missing-SYSVOL-Share-folders.html

Same in principle, should be easy enough to fix :)

Could you guys take a look at this question? I feel like I'm going around in circles but I just can't put my finger on what the problem is. This is pertaining to a DNS issue.

DNS test . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Passed

and other DCs also have some of the names registered.
[WARNING] The DNS entries for this DC cannot be verified right now on DNS

.
PASS - All the DNS entries for DC are registered on DNS server '192.168.1.5'
and other DCs also have some of the names registered.
Need a bit of DNS help here:

author had two nics, on with an ""outside IP address", one with an private IP address. Both nics registered in SRV land. To make matters worse, author had a router supplying DHCP and DNS with the outside DNS servers being passed down as preferred DNS servers to its clients.

Yep, its a mess.

Would like someone to help me stop the router from interfering, blow away DNS and redo it all, then get the client and server back up for him.

The unused NICs have already been disabled. Now it's metadata on the server within DNS and netbios that is causing problems.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23907094/Cannot-Access-Interent.html?cid=1066&anchorAnswerId=24034715#a24034715

Still wanting help in there Chief? Bit of a long thread that one ;)

Chris
desperately chris:

Seems to be a major DNS and DHCP problem.

Two nics were on the system, Now DNS has a bunch of greyed folders and is missing the LDAP SRV records.

I will need to set at my DNS, (which is out at sea), to figure out this mess.

I really could use your help Chris. We have to straighten DNS and DHCP, it appears.
Well, I could use a little assistance on this:

The author and I are not clicking well and this author is spending some serious time awake trying to resolve this issue.

The author has two domains on the same subnet supported by one DHCP server. The Forward lookup zones are messed up and the SRV records are intertwined.

The author states he promoted one DC as a backup to the other. So, I am assuming, like myself, that another expert was misunderstanding the intent of the author and advised him to promote the second DC.

All errors appear to be DNS related. SRV records are intertwined, zone transfers don't look good. Both DCs appear to think they are on the same domain, one has an improper preferred DNS server.

Please join us and maybe you can correspond with this author better than I can. This author is new and thrown into a domain he wasn't the originator of.

Please join us.

Anyone around this evening that fancies a bit of a go with this?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24609278/I-can-not-ping-a-new-dc-on-my-domain-nor-can-I-join-computers-to-the-domain-of-a-remote-office.html

He's in a rush and I'm off to bed in a few minutes.

A bit of a confused set up, still uncertain if he has NAT between the networks, I rather suspect not, but...

Anyway, he can't talk to his DC from a system on the same network, something is quite wrong there.  In theory he might be attempting the packet sniffer to see if the requests are making it.

Cheers guys!

Chris
Hi DNS guys/gals:

I have someone who is looking for a command line tool to query a DNS (SAME AS PARENT) record. This person has WINS lookup for DNS, where DNS will query WINS if needed. In DNS, there is a (SAME AS PARENT) resource record that points to the WINS servers. That the record he wants to see when he types his command line tool. Will DIG do this, or do you have some other method of querying the SAME AS PARENT RECORDS)?

Points are here if you want to get them.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24669594/Where-does-Windows-store-WINS-information-specified-under-DNS-administration-utility.html?anchorAnswerId=25223530#a25223530
Is there a DNS bug going around that's knocking down domains and deleting DNS records, (forward lookup zones and MSDCS records)??

WE COULD USE SOME DNS HELP HERE:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24779169/How-to-start-troubleshooting-sudden-slowdown-of-all-W2003-network-services-to-100-XP-PRO-and-Vista-Business-clients.html

There are a few old inconsistencies that can cause behaviour like that, including Lingering or Conflicting (the latter is prefixed in the directory with CNF) Objects. Conflicts will need to be checked using ADSIEdit or similar.

If it's records disappearing, check Aging / Scavenging. Refresh Intervals less than 24 hours == bad since the vast majority of processes only refresh once in that period.

Red crosses on the zone suggest problems loading rather than problems with the data it contains. DNS and Directory Service event logs for those. Did you ever get your DCDiag?

If DNS absolutely refuses to load from AD, switch to standard primary (with non-secure updates), that gives time to look into potential problems in AD.

Chris
The problem with this is, the server doesn't recognize itself as a server. The FSMO roles still seem in tact. But, one DNS server x's out, and MMC goes zoo zoo. You have to logon to the DNS snapin without using mmc. Also, RPC doesn't work.

All at once all of these problems just occured after about a year of working well.

The one that looses its lunch is the PDCe. It's the first DC on the domain and has created the delegation records in DNS. When you actually get into the DNS snaping, an error pops up when you try to expand the server. It says something like this DNS server is no longer a part of this forest. This forest cant be found, do you want to delete it. I played around with DNS long enough to get it right, but this was a 3:00 am jobby. I was pretty incohearant at the time. I thought I would be the only one who has seen this. So, I did the best I could on one of my lans before I had to fly. I think I got it up during that time.

Chris, we could use your expertise on this DNS issue. Please join us.

This administrator is taking a long walk on a short pier. Anyone well versed in MS exchange willing to help AD and 2003 server experts?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/26967315/Group-Policy-Update-Failed.html
I've posted Chief, will do what I can :)
Thanks D.

There are a lot of hidden issues here:

No Sysprep/domain prep that I can see, DNS is jacked, Journal wrap as a result, AD as a result, Exchange on a non-gc domain controller, FSMO roles on a DC that was never properly added to the domain.

I am thinking we need to temporarily take this 2008 server out of the equation for a little bit until we can salvage Exchange on a 2003 member server and properly promote it back into the domain.
Yep, posted a nice long suggestion :-)

I'm going to be in and out all day but will try and help where I can.
