Merging Two Domains

Here's the setup:

Two domains are set up in a hotel. One domain is for the backoffice, and has a Windows 2000 domain controller that mainly functions as a file server. This network is connected to a T1, and the local IP's are 192.168.1.0. The other domain was set up by Micros, and includes an Opera server and a Fidelio server running W2k3 and W2k respectively. Both servers are domain controllers. This network is connected to a seperate T1 with much stricter firewall permissions (port 25 is blocked for instance...). The IP's on this network are 10.52.1.0.

The hotel wants to be able to get to both the Opera and Fidelio servers as well as the file server from the back office without installing an additional network card and connecting the workstation to both networks (what we've been doing in the past). All Internet traffic from the Opera and Fidelio servers needs to go through the Opera T1. The other W2k server (file server) and all workstations need to use the less-restricted T1 for Internet access.

Any ideas on how to set this up?

I don't see why you need to join the domains although you could setup trusts. Just get the users to specify usernames/passwords on the other domain.

The networking is fairly simple, put a router between the two networks and on each host add a static route to the other network with the Route Add command (-P on end to make it remember after reboot). You can add the static routes to the workstations with DHCP if you're using it.

Since the extra router won't have a default gateway it won't forward to the Internet even if someone tries to hack their PC to try to get to the Internet through the other LAN.

hmm your setup seems very overkill, if you dont want to rebuild then you will need trusts

It's not only overkill it's positively dangerous. Each dual-homed PC that they have currently, if compromised, can be set up as a router and join the two networks together so the so-called protected network is connected to an unprotected one. Change my previous suggestion of setting up a router between the two LANs and use a firewall instead.

Wow. I didn't realize how easy it was to set up a trust. The only other question I have is about DNS and WINS. How will the names belonging to the trusted domain get resolved? Across the trust, or should I add each server as a secondary name and WINS server for the other domain?

DNS is very easy, you just create a new zone on the hotel DNS server for the office namespace and make it secondary to the office DNS server for that zone.

Have you put a decent firewall in between the office and the hotel yet? I'm still concerned that people staying in the hotel as guests can gain access to the office network and after you replicate DNS zones it's even easier for them to access it.

The guest network is completely seperate. It has it's own public IP. Everyone that has access to one of the networks in question has access to the other one as well. This is mainly just for convenience. We will be installing a SonicWall between the networks when we get approval from Micros to start the project.
