The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Event ID 102:  Group Policy MSI Unavailable

Asked by kaos_theory in Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory

Can Windows XP systems host a share containing an MSI for a group policy?  If no, then just supply a link and tell me I'm a moron lol

Anyway, here's the problem:

Clients:  Windows XP Pro
Servers:  Windows 2003 Active Directory DC
Network:  Two different subnets, one in VA, one in GA -- VA site has DC, GA site has only XP clients.

Group Policy is pushing Office 2003 Pro in a restricted form (only Word / Excel) -- the MSI for the policy is a beefy Windows XP computer on the GA subnet, static IP address, and after running into the problem, the share is now with Everyone / Full Control both on the sharing tab and the NTFS security.

XP client on the GA segment logs onto the network fine, event log and gpresult indicates it sees the policy, and then an error in the Applog that says the MSI is unavailable.  If I go to the RSOP on the share and type in the name of the computer I'm testing, it has full control rights on the MSI -- I can also manually execute the MSI and install the program if I browse to the UNC path from the test client.

Two questions -- first one being, is it possible to host this type of share successfully for a GPO application install, or does it have to be from a 2000 or 2003 server? Could it be that I used \\x.x.x.x\gpapps$\msoffice as the path instead of the name of the server, I put the IP address in the GPO?

Oh one more thing -- the domain policy is applied with the registry hack to wait for network before logon...

So confused and frustrated at this point... :-(
