By the way... you don't "Include" folders in a backup. You should only "EXCLUDE" folders that you don't want backed up.

Browse All TopicsHello, I am having a rather disconcerting problem with by backup utility. For some reason it is not backing up all the data I select. For instance I normally select the System State, and a folder called “alpine” form my hard drive. Under the alpine folder there is a folder called “Jobs” which has about 2000 folders under it each one representing a job.
Last week a database maintenance went foul (user error of course) and deleted a bunch of these highly important Job folders. I wasn’t too concerned because “hey, I have a daily backup!” Problem was when I went to restore that backup, the folders under “Jobs” quit somewhere towards the bottom (around the “Wh’s alphabetically) this left over 200 missing. VERY BAD DEAL!!! After much worrying and data recovery tools we were able to get some of them back but not all.
My problem is how can I make SURE that ALL the folders in under the jobs folder are backup? I can’t manually select them because there are many new ones created every day and I don’t want to manually change the backup every evening. Why doesn’t the backup utility include ALL the folders under the one I select?
Thanks in advance!

thanks for the quick reply.
OK, first of all sorry about the cross posting. This new question wizard is a little difficult to figure out some times.
#1 yes, I am using Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1
#2 I was using the SBS wizard.
#2 I don’t see much difference between putting the green check on all the folders I want backed up and leaving cleared the check boxes on the folders I don’t want backed up.

There's no reason to apologize for the cross-posting... that's what you're supposed to do. It's just important that you specify you are using SBS in your question because Experts generally cannot see all the zones the question is listed in.
So... back to your question...
There is no option to put a green check on all the folders you want backed up if you use the SBS's Backup Wizard. That wizard is in the Server Management Console > Backup.
You should not be using the wizard that's in the NTBackup Program itself.

I'll also point out that in reviewing your previous questions I see in this one: http:Q_22039971.html that you do seem to be using the NTBackup program directly. You also mention that you are following a book "Mastering Server 2003" which is NOT something you should be using to understand a Windows Small Business Server.
While SBS includes Server 2003, it is so much more than that. For a list of my recommended books, please see http://sbsurl.com/list

Ok, my apologies, First I went and manually checked and I am NOT running SBS as I thought. I am running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition.
That other post is from another company I sometimes do work for. It’s totally unrelated, different server, different network, everything. It was also posted several months ago.
So now that tats out of the way I do not have this different wizard you mentioned. What are my options? are you telling me that this built in backup utility in 2003 standard edition is no good and I should be using SBS?
Thanks, Jacob
Well, if the server WAS SBS then you should be using it's wizards... but if you are using standard edition, of course you can't use them... since they don't exist in that edition.
So... as long as you back up the PARENT folder... every new folder added to that directory should get backed up. There should be no reason for you to have to continually modify your backup settings in order to get the new folders included.

A reason that it wouldn't back up a folder could be that the permissions of the parent folder are not propagating downward. The SYSTEM account would need to have FULL Control, as would the account which the backup is running under (whatever account owns the item in the Task Scheduler).

Since you cross-posted this in the Small Business Server Zone, can you confirm whether or not you're running an SBS? If so, then you need to follow the SBS Backup procedure -- which is handled by running the SBS Backup Wizard.
