Question

Installing software on win 2003 terminal srv from a local network

Asked by: eyal_barouk

Hi,
I am trying to install some software on a windows 2003 server standard (used as a terminal server).
When installing from CD the installation runs OK but when I try to install it from a copy of the installation program, which I have downloaded from my software vendor, placed on my local network I get this error:
"
An error has occurred while running the setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications
"
Please mind:
- I am logged in as an administrator.
- The downloaded file installes OK on any other client machine.
- I have restarted the server before tryng to install.

Thank you.

Instead of just running the setup program directly try running it through Add/Remove Programs > Add New Programs.

In terminal services you must install program in the INSTALL mode in order that it installs properly. When you have finished the install and want to revert back to EXECUTE mode. If you use Add/Remove programs then this happens automatically. If you want to do it manually issue the command
CHANGE USER /INSTALL
and then install the software, When finished use
CHANGE USER /EXECUTE

What program are you trying to install?  And is the setup file located on a network share?  Or on the Terminal Server itself?

One other thing... is there Anti-Virus software running on this server?  If so, disable it before installing.

TechSoEasy,
The software is eDeveloper 10 (what once used to be Magic)
The installation file is located on the terminal local hard drive

firstly are you at the console of the terminal server?

if not are you attaching to the Terminal server with the commant MSTSC /C this attached you to the console of the device rather than a terminal Session.

disable AV during installation of the application. and make sure that you are using Adminsitrator credentialse.

open a cmd promt and enter Change user /install to place the server in application installation mode.  doing this activates the Shadow key (this is the place MS Terminal Services stores user registry keys for population into users HKCU key on first use.

it is to be found here:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Compatibility\Install.

then navigate to the location of the setup program and install as normal,  once installation has completed

enter the command Change user /execute this returns the application to application running mode.

Thanks tstsh,
I did everything you advised, including turning off the AV but still got the same message : (setup is already running...)
I am beginning to suspect that there is a problem with the installation file I have downloaded as I found posts in the eDeveloper FORUM from users complaining about the same problem.

I scanned a few forums regarding eDeveloper and wonder if you need to install a different kind of database for it when it's on a Terminal Server?  There isn't very good documentation for any of that... so I didn't really look further.

Yes, they still have a long way to go documentation wise, although I must admit that it is quit an impressive development studio.
Regarding your question, if I understand it correctly, the DB is already running on a different machine. What I am trying to do is upgrade the client environment of eDeveloper which I already have installed and running on a terminal server.
I just thought there might be some security reasons which I was not aware of, enforced by the 2003 server, therefore my original post; As I mentioned, The installation runs perfectly when loaded from a CDROM issued by the manufacturer.

cn you copy the installation routine locally to the server and try from there?

Magic (eDeveloper manufacturer) have releases a document about the issue. I guess this could be helpful with other installations too; I have tried the second option they offer and it worked!

The doc's link:
http://support.magicsoftware.com/beta/MagicPC/Installing%20eDeveloper%20on%20Win2003SP2.doc

Here is a c.p (copy/paste) of it:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Installing eDeveloper on Win2003SP2==
Objective
This technical note will explain how to install the eDeveloper packages
on a Windows 2003SP2 machines.

Description
Customers who updated their operating systems to 2003SP2 came across an installation problem when using the supplied packages (.exe file)
an error was displayed -5009.

This error stems from an InstallShield limitation under this Windows service pack.

Solution
In some cases installing the latest version the InstallShield engine
helped.
This would require deleting the old directory of the engine from
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield,
downloading the newer version from
http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q108322/InstallShieldEngineUpdate701.exe
installing it and then trying again.

An easier solution can be considered - extracting the package exe
thus creating the folder containing regular installation.

The syntax is:
Exe_name /extract_all:FOLDERNAME
For example:
eDev101sp2.exe /extract_all:C:\Temp\sp2install
This will create an installation directory under c:\temp called sp2install
with the setup.exe file to use.
