HI All expert,

My exchange server 2003 is out of disk space and i try to use ntbackup to clear the log file but it pop up the error of event id 8019 it said backup failed. My OS is in C drive and my exchange is in E drive. Please help. Thanks

If your backup is failing, then odds are that your transaction logs are not being flushed.

you can simply delete the old transaction logs files directly , it will not cause any issue

NEVER EVER TELL SOMEONE TO DELETE THE TRANSACTION LOGS.

I cannot stress that highly enough.

Deleting the transaction logs is only something that should be done with proper care and precautions as it can result in the Exchange database failing to mount correctly and cause more problems than simply running out of disk space.

My article above gives some pointers on what can be done, but deleting the transaction logs should not be one of them unless you are 100% sure that they are not required - which in this case you cannot.

Besides completely compromising the security of your data, reducing your options for a restore (considering backups aren't working, let's just delete the last chance we have if it dies), and means that if things really go bad; you could simply lose all your data - and no-one, not even Microsoft, is going to be able to help if you have no backups and do something stupid like delete the transaction logs.

Considering the easiest solution is to crack out NTBackup and do a quick backup of Exchange - or even just compressing the transaction log files - I am awe-struck at the mere suggestions of deleting the logs.

What cause i cannot backup the information store using NTbackup? isn't because of my exchange drive is out of capacity? normally it will delete the old transaction log automaticlly after i backup the information store rite?

Yes, it will normally flush the transaction logs after a backup - but you said at the top that the backup was failing.

Do a full backup, which will flush the transaction logs, which will free up space.

I replace my exchange drive to a new hard drive with bigger capacity. Now is working & i can backup my information store as well.
