Question

Upgrading windows 2000 domain to Windows 2003 and getting error when running adprep /forestprep

Asked by: tazmanian

Running adprep /forestprep on the Windows 2000 DC (sp4) controller and getting the following error:
Adprep detected that the logon user is NOT a member of the following groups: Enterprise Admins Group.

I then open the user that I am logged on as in Active Directory Computers and user and look in the members tab and he belongs to:
Domain Admin
Enterprise Admins
Group Policy Cretaor Owners
Schema Admins
Exchange Domain Server
Exchange Services

so not sure what is going on.  Any ideas?
things I have already done
1.  have already run the Schema update and it appeared to work fine when I look in adsiedit.
2. gpotool is not showing any errors
3. netdiag shows no errors
4. dcdiag shows no errors

when you run a forest prep it leaves behind a logfile. Can you try and locate the part of it where it gives errors and post that here. This is of much more help the the experts. Also are the permissions on the AD changed in the past? delegated to anyone or any other "special" extentions to the directory like Oralce Directory services etc?

In either case please post the log file ;-)

Regards,

I have searched the server for an adprep.log file and there is none.  I googled for the log file and it says that it is located at systemroot%\system32\debug\adprep\logs\ADPrep.log but there is no log located there.  I am running the adprep.exe with a date of 03/25/2003 and here is the exact error:

Adprep detected that the logon user is not a member of the following group: Enterprise Admins Group.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep has stopped without making changes.
[User Action]
Verify the current logged on user is a member of Enterprise Admins group, Schema Admins group and picosecond.com\Domain Admins group.

Are you running Exchange or any other server that has modified the schema?  If Exchange are you using a mail-enabled account (ie does it have a mailbox)?

by: tazmanianPosted on 2007-06-27 at 11:32:17ID: 19374835

I am using an account that does have an exchange account tied to it and yes the server does have the modified schema as I stated above. Exchange is a separate server from this PDC if that helps.

Look at %systemroot%\system32\ldif.err and let us know what errors it shows.

Nothing there either.

I just downloaded SP2 for Windows 2003 and expanded the files and tried the adprep in there and still no log file but the same error as above.

Oke, i states that the logged on user is not member of all the required groups, as stated above. Are you using a custom user that has been added to the domain/schema admin groups manually? If so use the original administrator user that promoted the domain.

Also check if there are any policies active on the current user object or computer object, If so disable them. If this doesnt help, try creating a temporary user (perferred at the root of the ad to make sure no policies are active on it (or the default users container). And add that user to the domain administrators group and schema administrators group. and try again...

Chris_Gralike,
Your worth your weight in gold.  Enjoy the points.  I created a new user with the required rights and it now works with no problem.  thanks!

It might still do you allot of good to figure out why the original admin user doesnt / didnt work. Even tough its a best practice to disable that user until needed it might save you allot of pain in the future...

Good luck, regards,
