Transfer of Active Directory to new Hardware

Hello Experts

We are in the process of decommisioning all our existing servers.

Could you please advise on a solution to replicate Active Directory to the new domain controllers.
I understand that i will need to transfer the fsmo roles, is there anything else which i am overlooking?

Plan of action

add the new server to the domain and promote to a domain controller
transfer the fsmo roles to the new domain controller and allow replication to occur leave for 48 hours

turn off the old domain and remove the 2 domain controller records that exist in active directory, sites and services. My intention not to run dcpromo on the 2 dc  that already exists is because i would like to keep this intact while i am rebuilding the domain. so if thing go pear shaped i am able to get the domain up and running.

I could image the new domain controller which has the active directory database then transfer the fsmo roles back to the orginal server that way i still have my the domain up and running.

Any recommendations on how i should approach this would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Thank you for the useful information KCTS.
We have one domain and one D.C.
We want to move the existing 2003 Standard DC to new, more stable hardware running Server 2008. How does the process change when replicating data between 2003 and 2008?
I forgot to say that we want to keep the same computer name and I.P.
