The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Server having problems becoming DC

Asked by Powerhousecomputing in Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory

Background
Did have two DC (EXCHSeRVR and cSERVER) on the domain,
one of the DC was I believe the primary controller TSERVER (192.168.0.1);
this has started to die, RAM, Motherboard, HDD failures so we brought a new server
which is now called ID-SRVR-1 to take over this roll.
 
I followed the following setup
Added the server to the domain, used the Wizard to add the AD, DNS
and DHCP checked all the event logs etc read up as much as I could in making this
the primary controller. I then shut the main server down and recorded any problems in the event log;
one of which was the five FSMO roles and transferred these across from cSERVER to ID-SRVR-1.
I then shut the server down again and some of the errors have disappeared except one.
 
NTDS KCC, 1308      The Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC) has detected that
successive attempts to replicate with the following domain controller has
consistently failed. Attempts: 3 Domain controller:CN=NTDS Settings,
CN=cSERVER,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,
DC=wire,DC=localPeriod of time (minutes): 131 The Connection object for this
domain controller will be ignored, and a new temporary connection will be established to
ensure that replication continues. Once replication with this domain controller resumes,
the temporary connection will be removed. Additional Data Error value:1256 The
remote system is not available. For information about network troubleshooting,

I have then run the NetDiag and DCDiag tools on ID-SRVR-1 and recorded
the errors and I noticed that cSERVER is still being used for replication.
I havent demoted this server yet!
