Windows 2003 member server Joining domain
Very Important,
Hello friends,
Please help me....We have a windows 2003 member server in one of our plants and that needs to be joined the domain. It joins the domain, but does not show the computer name under the computers on the doamin controller. everything works fine after awile it stops the dhcp service and then disconnects the clients at the plant. The member server provides DHCP for the local users.
The main domain controller is running windows 2000, but there are other windows 2003 domain controllers on the site.
- I have joined to "workgroup" and then re-joined the domain- Joins fine but does not show on the doamin controller
I do not want to change the comuter name b/c of the shared drive mapping etc....
Please help
Pradeep.

Hi!
You should "authorize" DHCP server in Active Directory. On member server, go to Administrative tools, DHCP, right click your server and click Authorize...
I'm not sure why you wouldn't find its computer account in AD after joining the domain, I can only suggest that you use Find... maybe the account is some other OU not in Computers container.

Thanks for your comments...I did autorize....the DHCP...and "find" entire container....to find the computer...can't find it....

Since I cant sind it...can I create the same name of the member server under the AD and rejoin the menber server to the doamin...will this work....?
remove the computer from the domain.
create a computer account for the member in the default container...
then join the computer to the domain.

when you say remove...do you mean join as "worgroup" and then join "domain" ?...and default container means"computers" under AD?
There is actually no need to create computer account in advance, but it won't hurt. Disjoin/rejoin domain. I'm not sure but maybe you will have to check if DHCP server needs to be authorized again.
yes...

Ok...I created the account prior to dis-join the domain...removed the member from the doamin and re-joined the domain....but on the AD under the propeties on the computer name...I do not see the OS, sp vesrion like the other member servers properties....do you guys know why?
you said you don't want to change the computer name...
fine...we won't make anything visible to the users....
lets say you system's name is server02
let a dns entry exist for server02 with this server's ip...
now change the server's name to something else like server03...then join it to the domain.
now accessing both server02 and server03 will result in same location...

where and how to create this entry? 'let a dns entry exist for server02 with this server's ip...
Sorry I'm new to DNS...thanks
Sorry I'm new to DNS...thanks
you have a active directory...so there must be some DNS server that is being used all the servers and clients.....its there...

trying....thanks
You shouldn't have to dis-join or change the computer name. I am however a little confused, you say this server is a "Member Server" but then you call it a domain controller. Which is it, a member server or a DC? If this machine is not a DC it will not show up in the Domain Controllers area, it will show up as a normal computer.

sorry for the confusion.....
The server is a member server :rivertonsvr
it needs to join : mar-tor-dom
question: even if "rivertonsvr" joined "mar-tor-dom" successfully it does not show "rivertonsvr" under the "computers" in "mar-tor-dom"
- I took the advice and manually created "rivertonsvr" in "mar-tor-dom", and then dis -joined rivertonsvr from mar-tor-dom and then joined back, still i do not see the dns anme, service pack version, os version fields in the properties under the 'rivertonsvr' under computers in the AD in mar-tor-dom.
but the clients in "rivertonsvr" and dhcp are working fine...my only worry is that usaly when you join a computer or server the name automatically apears on the "computers" in the AD under mar-tor-dom, why not this?, 2nd i'm afraid this might work for some time and then fail. which happened before.

it may be possible that the computer account is created some where else(other than computer container)...
now that you have added the computer to the domain...search active directory for this computer...if you find it delete it...create a computer account for this under computer container...remove the member from domain and join again
