DVD Recorder - DVR - What do I need to record tv shows & record-while-viewing?

I have cable.

I want a DVR that can record shows while I am away.

I also want to start recording a 4 hour long show... I will start viewing the show 1 hour after the recording beginis... so that I can fastfoward through commercials.

Is this possible, and if so... what do I need to buy to do this?
