I have currently two DC.
DC1 2000
DC2 2003 with exchange
The DC 2000 is about six years old and needs to be replaced. I currently have a new server that will replace the domain controller. Prior to doing this I have a few issues that I think I need to resolve before I can make the new server take over as the PDC.
DC1 2000
Schema Master
DC2 2003
RID/PDC/Infrastructure/DNS
Master
Whenever DC1 is shutdown our email doesnt work anymore-- we get an offline message in Outlook. As soon as DC1 is back up and running the user's outlook is online again.
I ran a DCDIAG and got the errors below.
Starting test: NetLogons
Unable to connect to the NETLOGON share! (\\DC2\netlogon)
[DC2] An net use or LsaPolicy operation failed with error 1203, No n
etwork provider accepted the given network path..

Starting test: Advertising

Everything else passed.
I have checked our DNS and everything looks fine. I can do forward and reverse lookups on any machine in the building.
I was not the original IT guy that build this domain. I do know he originally was going to completely shutdown DC1 and have just the DC2 with server 2003. However, he had some issues with trying to shutdown the root domain and have the new take over. I think some of his issues were that the network would not look to DC2 but instead kept looking for DC1---think user log in was not working 100% either.
Any ideas on the above would be appreciated.
Lastly, would i really have any conflicts if I went ahead and added the third domain to our network and made the machine the master? Or would it be better to completley remove DC1 and have all issues resolved that DC2 can function without it and then add the new DC?
