The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

New Domain Controller - Need clarification on steps

Asked by roscoe2008 in Windows 2003 Server

Tags: Microsoft, Windows Server, 2003

My network is one domain, with 2 sites.  Each site has it's own DC running 2003 server.

I've purchased two new servers to replace the existing DC's and want to carry out this upgrade without giving myself any unnecessary headaches!

My understanding is that after adding my new server to the domain as a member server I then need to run ADPREP on the exising DC before I can then run DCPROMO on the new server.

The new server is Windows 2003 server R2 and I've read that I need to run the ADPREP on the existing DC from the R2 CD.  I also read that the existing DC should be running SP2, which it is not.
I inherited this domain and I've never had much confidence in how my predecessor setup the domain in the first place.  For example, on the existing DC at my main site, I cannot access Windows Updates from the MS site as it constantly asks me to install the Active X each time I load the page, and continues to do so after I choose to install it.  Obviously I could download SP2 directly from Microsoft but I'm concerned that as I can't upgrade to SP2 from the MS Update site I wonder if my predecessor has disabled anything on the server preventing updates from taking place, if so then would SP2 give me problems?

Also, need Clarification on the following:
After this I need to run ADPREP /Forestprep and then ADPREP /Domainprep.
Run DCPromo on the new DC.
Set it as a GC server
Transfer the FSMO roles to the new DC from the old
Power down the old DC and ensure the domain functions correctly
If so, demote the old DC using DCPROMO
