What causes an Event 57 System failed to flush data from the transaction log at shut down?

This is a single server with and external UltraSCSI IBM Drive Array attached.
This error occurs at shut down.
Also, we have have not been able to back this drive up using Symantec Back-Up exec 11d. back-Up Exec is trying to back the locally attached USB drive to an IBM DLT drive that is also locally attached to the system.
We have this same drive attached to an IBM intellisation Z-Pro 6221-33U system with no known errors and I am at a total loss.

Why are we receiving this error?

Windows Server 2003 Event 57 System failed to flush data from the transaction log

All of the hardware updates for the above server are current.
All of the Windows Updates are current as well
This is a standard version of Windows Server. This is NOT R2
It is running service pack 3 plus all current updates

We have run all IBM hardware diagnostics and there are no known problems being shown by PC Doctor.Start Free Trial
