thats exactly what DFS is for.  i would suggest using Win2k3 R2 as if will synchronize at the bit level and will make for those syncs to make much more efficient use of your internet connections.

There is a word doc posted on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfs.mspx

Additionally,  you could consider creating a two way external trust between the two domains to try to get this to replicate.

Here is some information related to creating trusts:

Thanks guys.

I am really confused with the software though.

Is DFS-R in Windows SBS 2003 R2,
or
Windows Server 2003 R2

Been having trouble working this one out, the difference is a bit of a mind**.

Thanks :)

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 07:23:30ID: 20733788

DFS is available in each.  Thats one of the nicest things about SBS is that you dont lose an enterprise feature like DFS just because you use SBS.

If you need SBS, then use SBS, but dont let DFS be the deciding factor.

by: recruititPosted on 2008-01-24 at 07:51:19ID: 20734061

Ok, but I only appear to have Distributed File System, and not DFS-R or the DFS management console, its wierd.

by: recruititPosted on 2008-01-24 at 07:51:35ID: 20734067

Could you explain how I get to the DFS-R console?

Thanks :)

i would jump into DFS head first.  i definitely recommend setting up a testbed and messing around with it first.  here is a pretty good beginner article...http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows2003-Distributed-File-System.html

start > run > mmc > "ok" > add Distributed File System to the console

by: recruititPosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:05:53ID: 20734198

In the Snap-Ins, only Distributed File System appears.
=/

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:07:40ID: 20734211

Uhm, what else would you be looking for?

by: recruititPosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:12:56ID: 20734271

DFS Management, its actually named that.

In Distributed File System, their isnt the replication part.

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:15:09ID: 20734302

Sorry, but i'm thoroughly confused.  Are you assuming "DFS" and DFS-R" are two different things?  DFS Distrubuted File System....it is in itself Replication.  Not sure what you are looking for here.

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:22:13ID: 20734382

that console is only available in R2.  R2 has an upgraded (updated) DFS feature set.

by: recruititPosted on 2008-01-24 at 08:26:11ID: 20734420

I have Windows SBS R2, so I should have it, or am supposed to.

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 09:16:18ID: 20734959

Not exactly sure how to get that available in SBS R2.  It would typically be managed from an R2 server, not R2 SBS server.
sorry about the confusion

DFS and DFS-R are not the same thing.  DFS is the distrubted naming convention that refers client requests for a DFS link to an actual server and sharename.  DFS does not imply replication of files.  DFS is kind of like DNS for server UNC paths.

DFS-R is the replicaiton engine that is often used with DFS to replciate files between referal points for DFS namespaces.  It is the successor to the FRS service- the primary new feature being block level replication which prevents an entoire file from being replicated if only a small portion of it changed.

DFS/DFS-R are not available in SBS 2003 R2 even though it is in Server 2003 R2.  SBS 2003 R2 only has the prior DFS/FRS services available.  DFS-R is (supposedly, I have not installed it yet) included in SBS 2008.
