I heard that if you stopped APC PowerCute services that would stop the issue and was the culprit so I did what was stated rebooted and it stopped for about 2 days and BAM!! its back. Now Im reading that its due to too many keys being open or such and Im not sure if that is the issue. I am completely baffled, frustrated and desperately looking for an answer to resolve this issue!! PLEASE HELP!!

Looks like you are having a kernel memory issue.

You might have event 2019 or 2020 in the system log.

I would suggest removing PowerChute or updating it to the latest version.
If you have /3gb in the boot.ini that could be contributing.
Additionally I would make sure you are running Service Pack 2 so that you have a recent VSS hotfix to ensure VSS isn't hogging all of your kernel memory.

Make sure your antivirus engine is completely up to date (not just the definitions).

Lastly,  make sure you are not sharing any network printers with the "HP Tcp/ip" port type per the following KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933999/en-us

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 07:41:17ID: 20733968

I have seent event ID 2020 in the system log also at times.
If I remove PowerChute is that ok? Or is that something I should really have on my server?
How do I change the /3gb in the boot.ini?

I am running TrendMicro SMB as my antivirus no Symatec products other than the remote for backupexec 11d.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 07:44:55ID: 20734009

PowerChute is designed to help your server shut down in the event your UPS detects it lost power.  It is useful,  but is very well known as far as causing problems.  Just make sure you have the latest version from their web site.

I would hit Trend Micro's web site and see if there is an engine update available for you.  Example:  You bought version 10....but they could have versions 10.0.2, 10.1.3, and so on.  So just make sure you are up to date.

If you see event 2020's that means you are exhausting your paged pool kernel memory.   Look at this KB to tune your registry to fix that problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q312362/

I would start with this and it'll probably fix your issue.

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 09:23:43ID: 20735034

I had a big problem with the /3GB switch in boot.ini doing similar things.  Trend has been pretty stable on all of my servers so I dodn't suspect that it is the problem.

To check the boot.ini file open Notepad and open the file "c:\boot.ini" (assuming that C: is your boot partition).  The file will be read-only by default but look for a parameter in the startup entry that reads "/3GB".  You're looking for something similar to:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server" /fastdetect /3GB

If you don't have the /3GB parameter then this is not the issue.  If you do have that parameter then you'll need to edit the boot.ini file to remove it.  To do so:
Close the file in notepad.
Go to a command prompt.
Enter the following:
  c:  (or use the drive letter that the system boots to if not c:)
  cd\
  attrib boot.ini -s -h -r
  notepad c:\boot.ini
(Make the change to remove the /3GB parameter and save the file)
Exit notepad.
Return to command prompt and enter:
  c:
  cd\
  attrib boot.ini  +s +h +r

Reboot the server.

vtsinc,

completely remove it?? do not modify it?

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 09:48:56ID: 20735327

You can try following the 2020 KB I sent you first.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 09:56:22ID: 20735404

Here's the easy way to edit boot.ini

Control Panel
System
Advanced Tab
Click Startup and Recovery
There will be an "Edit" button
That will bring up boot.ini in notepad.
Made changes.
Save the file in notepad.
Reboot

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 09:58:40ID: 20735434

Yes, I'd just remove the /3GB switch.

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:02:24ID: 20735493

PlaceboC6 I will def try the link first than go to the boot.ini file.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 10:07:36ID: 20735559

Exchange has a little performance gain from the /3gb,  but it kills your kernel memory that is available to the OS.  You might be able to follow the 2020 kb and tweak it....and keep the /3gb also.  Best of both worlds.  If the KB doesn't take care of the problem,  then remove the /3gb.

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:11:27ID: 20735615

An article discussing why /3GB switch is NOT recommended on SBS can be found here.

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:24:09ID: 20735754

THIS IS WHAT MY BOOT.INI FILE LOOKS LIKE NOW.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server" /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=3030 /NoExecute=OptOut
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

AND IT SHOULD LIKE LIKE THIS AFTER CORRECT?

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server" /fastdetect /3GB /NoExecute=OptOut
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:24:50ID: 20735760

IM SORRY I MEAN LIKE THIS:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server" /fastdetect /Userva=3030 /NoExecute=OptOut
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:30:26ID: 20735811

I'd also remove the /userva parameter so it ends up as:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Im just stumped on one thing. Why am i getting errors on my backupexec which is on another server? That can relate?? Is that whats causing these issues?

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:42:26ID: 20735920

Is Backup Exec using the remote agent to hit the server that has a problem?  The agent would consume resources when it is active.

When I recently fought this problem I spent about three weeks with memory tuning etc. and the server was running out of resources every day or two.  After removing the /3GB the server's been up for 2 months nonstop.

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:49:52ID: 20736002

Yep!!! Its using the remote agent on the server with the errors in the event log.

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 10:54:21ID: 20736034

If you get curious about the memory allocation try using Process Explorer for Microsoft Winternals.  It will give you a good idea of what's going on.  If you also install debug symbols (as outlined in the Process Explorer help file) you can see real-time paged and nonpaged pool utilization and also a before/after comparison when or if  you remove the /3GB parameter.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 11:00:13ID: 20736088

Backup Exec uses the Volume Shadow Copy service which is a major user of kernel memory.  Having the servers running sp2 ensures that you have a recent VSS hotfix installed.

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 11:02:31ID: 20736121

I only  have Service Pack 1 on both servers.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 11:42:04ID: 20736530

The version of VSS that SP1 includes has big kernel memory issues.  They have released a number of fixes leading up until sp2.  If you are not comfortable downloading sp2 and installing on the servers I would considering calling MS and getting the latest rollup package for VSS as a step in this issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349/en-us

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 11:42:40ID: 20736536

Acutally wait!  You can download the one on that page without calling MS.  That is rare.  :)

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 11:45:08ID: 20736566

I should really install SP2 though right?

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-01-24 at 11:46:23ID: 20736578

Unless you have software that's not compatible with SP2 I'd go that route.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 11:48:09ID: 20736588

Just make sure you have a good backup of C: and system state before you do it to be safe.

Most upgrades go without issue...but...........sometimes people have problems.

by: sbodnarPosted on 2008-01-24 at 11:49:02ID: 20736595

As far as i know I dont think I do so its prob best to do that.

One more crazy question which is probably real stupid... how do I know if I have an x64 system or x86 system?

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-24 at 11:50:27ID: 20736613

There isn't an x64 version of SBS yet,  but if you pull up system properties on a non SBS server it should tell you on the general tab.

by: ChiefITPosted on 2008-01-25 at 17:02:16ID: 20747866

I worked on a similar question:

Since this problem sarted a couple weeks ago, maybe this update is your problem and the answer is on this post as well.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;898060

by: ChiefITPosted on 2008-01-25 at 17:04:07ID: 20747873

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-25 at 18:01:25ID: 20748093

Service Pack 2 will also address if he is considering moving to that.

by: PlaceboC6Posted on 2008-01-30 at 17:28:34ID: 20783207

Any updates?

by: kennykoidPosted on 2008-04-24 at 23:47:53ID: 21437438

You can also apply the changes on Virtual Memory, instead of system managed. Change to Custom. Depending on the RAM capacity, Set initial size as (1.5 X RAM size) and maximun size to 4095. Example : 1 GB RAM , Initial size = 1536 and maximun = 4095.

by: jjozPosted on 2010-05-24 at 23:01:27ID: 32838804

yes, I also run into the same problem:

but after doing the pagefile re-creation followed y restart twice it works :-)
