The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Is there a way using Group Policy to have users view their own user directory without assign individual scripts?
Tags: Microsoft, Windows 2003 Server, Group Policy
We just performed a migration to a new server, and as of now all individual users in Active Directory have a connect to their individual folders.  Is there a way, perhaps in Active Directory to allow users to access and be mapped to their individual user folder (C:\data\Users\...) without having to reconfigure each profile within ADS?  I understand how to allow users to see one folder, but this is every user seeing their own folder that I'm having trouble with.  We have about 10 different groups with over 10-20 users per group which will take me forever to reassign.

If you could help ASAP I'd appreciate it.

Yes, you can configure that option on the profile Tab of the user in active directory users and computers

Why not just map redirect the users My Documents foder, you can redirect the folder to an individual folder for each user on the server with a group policy. All the folder permissions are set automatically and users can still access the folder via "My Documents" on their desktop

See

Yes, but if I have to go into each user under the profile tab that will take forever, we have over 150 users.  I want to create a policy that will allow users to get their mapped user folder upon login without having to create it individually.  Is there a way?

Doing it individually will take forever, if i can do this from one policy and link that to each group that would be easier?

Not if you do it as I suggested - as a bonus the Recycle Bin still works with redirected My Documents - It does not with a mapped drive.

Ok, but one last issue, I have migrated all the existing data from the old server which now sits on the new server located:

C:\data\users\... (all user directories)

How do I set it up with the data in those folders?  When logging in, how does the workstations/users view their data, is it just in the My Documents?  I'm getting closer to resolving this I think.

you will need to copy the data to the users "My Documents" - users just access data through the "My Documents" shortcut - they need not know it is really on the server

That's what I mean, where is the my document folders on the server.  When the migration was done, I'm not sure if they were created for each user.  There isn't a User's Share Folder listed on the C: like I'd normally see.

If you are using folder re-direction then the folder can be anyplace you like - normally on a server. Each users folder is created on first logon.

Sorry about the delay in ansewring you.

You can select multiple users at the same time ;)

I was able to setup redirection and test it on a few computers that I had access to loggin on.  But I'm guessing that for the remaining 150 systems I'll have to wait until users login tomorrow so the Document Folders are created and I can copy the data into their folders?  There won't be a way to create the folders prior so they are already in existence I take it?

Because we have folders in place now with documents already present for each user, is there a way to map the My Document folder to each user's (all users) folder on the server, instead of doing this the standard method?  That way it will already be mapped to each user folder and will lessen my work.
