I had a Server 2003 SP1 install and used RIS with no problems. I deployed about 20 machines without an issue using RIS.
The problem is: I recently received a licensed Server 2003 Standard Edition through Microsoft's Dream Spark for students. This install already includes SP2 and uses WDS instead of RIS. I have read all of Microsoft's white papers, and a few blogs about using WDS to capture and deploy an XP image. I still cannot get this working. Here is what I have done so far:
Installed WDS, configured, and used Vista's BOOT.WIM as the default boot image. I right-clicked this image and specified "Create new capture image." I followed the wizard and everything appeared to go good. I then boot the source XP computer into this capture image. At the capture wizard, I specify to store locally on "C:\XPCAP.WIM" and then check the "Upload image to WDS server". My server is simply named "SERVER2003" and belongs to DOMAIN.LOCAL.
When specifying the server name, I have tried "SERVER2003", "SERVER2003.DOMAIN", and "SERVER2003.DOMAIN.LOCAL",
and "192.168.1.x". All of which timeout after about ten minutes with "The network location cannot be reached".
I would really like to get this running, so any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I appologize if this is confusing, but anybody who has used WDS should be able to understand. Let me know if any clarification or more info is needed.
