missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Hello All,

This one I'm sure is pretty common.  My 2003 Server was freezing up.  On reboot it displayed the following:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I booted up from the CD and got into the Recovery Console and used chkdsk /r.  That failed at 31 percent both times.  I unfortunetly don't remember the reason it stated.  Something about being "unrecoverable."

I ran some Dell diags on the hardware which didn't show any errors.

I do have a recent full backup of the entire C drive (the only volume) and the System State.  I'm trying to decide what the quickest solution is.  Should I look into using the recovery console to repair the registry or just bite the bullet and do a fresh install of the OS followed by a full restore?

Any advice?
