What happens to a desktop when adding to a domain.

Say I had a computer that I have been using for a while. I have set up me desktop just so, with the icons wallpaper and such. This is just a PC sitting by itself, not on any network. But then the IT guy comes along and wants to add my computer to a domain. Will I have to rebuild my desktop from scratch or will I be able to use my existing one?
