The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

First install XP, then Server 2003 and at the end install Vista.

This article can help understand why:

Buy a copy of Boot-It NG [http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-next-generation.htm ]

This is a superb boot manager that will not only let you do what you've suggested ... but will totally isolate each system from the others;  will allow you to add even more systems if you ever want to;  is a superb image/restore utility (so you can image your installations easily ... and restore them if anything gets corrupted during testing; you get a bad virus or other malware; etc.);  and is an excellent partition manager, which will let you create, delete, resize, or move partitions as needed.

I'd suggest creating several 30 to 40 GB partitions for your OS's, and installing the OS's to each of these.

As an example of what you can (easily) do with Boot-It, here's the boot menu my primary system (using it now):   (I have another system with 14 installed OS's on the boot menu !!)

... Note:  You can easily set whatever OS you want as the default ... and the system will automatically boot to that OS if you don't choose something else within whatever time-out value you select (e.g. 5 seconds).

Any reason you want to multiboot instead of using Virtual Machines with VMWare and/or Virtual PC?

what I dit see on this program Boot-it whats possible to do with it, I realise I can do more,  like booting WIn98, Dos, even my Netware testing and Linux, and it gave me for all versions imaging ,all for euro 35.00
Thats the only reason to go for this

Boot-It is indeed very powerful.   The interface is a bit "geeky" --> but not hard; and once you get used to it you'll wonder how you ever managed without it !! :-)

Virtual machines are also a very nice way to test the basics of an OS => but do have some limitations in terms of the hardware interfaces and/or performance  ... for example, neither Virtual PC nor VMWare will run Vista Aero;  and Virtual PC does not support x64 guest OS's.   I actually do both -- multi-boot & use virtual machines (I have 17 virtual machines installed in addition to the multi-boot capability shown above).

VMWare, I believe, supports x64 guests.  And I saw an MVP (programmer) running Server 2008 with Hyper-V on his laptop with 4 GB of RAM and he had 6 VMs (including 2 using x64 OSs) running quite smoothly, all at the same time.  One unofficial performance estimate I heard had Hyper-V running 20% faster than VMWare ESX Server.  And it will be sold separately at a VERY affordable $28.

Yes, there are instances where you can't use a VM, but MOST of the time, VMs will cover what you want to do.

Yes, VMWare supports x64 guests -> I have both XP x64 and Vista x64 on VMWare virtual machines.   The biggest deficiency of the virtual machines is lack of direct access to high-performance graphics hardware; and in cases where it's needed the lack of access to specialized add-in cards (not often an issue).

... they do run quite nicely;  but there are deficiences -> lack of Aero on virtual Vista machines for example.
