How to change domain name on Windows Server 2000

I recently took over managing a Windows 2000 server that has the domain name as companyname.com instead of companyname.local  The network is not on the internet now and they want to connect it to a broadband connection.  I am concerned that it is  going to create problems when the network connects to the Internet.  How would I change the domain name from companyname.com to companyname.local.
