Question

Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service

Asked by: mattsam

Hi we have an onsite 2003 R2 standard edition server with SP2.  This is our TS server with about 100 users.
We started to get the 1500 and 1508 errors, and had to boot the server every 3 days but now we get this every day.  I have tried loads of thing to fix it and now I have to boot the server every morning.  The event log error show different users each time so have deduced it not just 1 users profile.
I have tried the eventid fix for 1500 and 1508 = edit the registry
I have tried the office fix = colleague tried that and reported back that it didnt work.
I have increased the virtural menory - we have 4 gigs ram and plenty of HDD space. ALSO CPU usage is low.
Today I removed the User Hive Profile Cleanup wizard and have read all EE articles on this and it seems to me that the issue is still unsolved so if anyone has a solution then please please tell me.

errors on the event log are = Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning correctly. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.  for C:\Documents and Settings\*****\ntuser.dat

Have you checked your memory usage? :) Maybe a stick of ram is failing?

Have you monitored the mem usage?

I would add more Ram if you have 100 users on TS on that server.

Hi,

depending on the type of user (type of activity), number of processors, amount of memory. This is a difficolt balance and it is not easy to decide when "scale up" and when to "scale out". Please have a look to this Microsoft guide (especially page 50, "Operating System Restrictions"): http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/d/6/5d6eaf2b-7ddf-476b-93dc-7cf0072878e6/TermServe-Size.doc

Hope this can help.
Cheers
Pino

Hi again,
did you apply already this article? http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=935649

If yo did, to chack all the possibilities try this:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
3. If the EnableRSS registry entry does not exist, create it. To do this, follow these steps:
  a.  On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  b.  In the New Value #1 box, type EnableRSS, and then press ENTER.
4. Right-click EnableRSS, and then click Modify.
5. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
6. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
7. In the details pane, right-click EnableTCPA, and then click Modify.
8. If the EnableTCPA registry entry does not exist, create it. To do this, follow these steps:
  a.  On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  b.  In the New Value #1 box, type EnableTCPA, and then press ENTER.
9. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
10. Exit Registry Editor.
11. Restart the computer.

If this has no result restore the previous registry values and restart the server again.
Hope this can help
Pino

Hi I will give that a try tonight and update in the morning

by: mattsamPosted on 2008-06-26 at 02:33:25ID: 21873053

Well I seemed to have fixed it, Working backward from reading the application logs the last readings where from the "attix " online system state backup and the log before that was our NTBACKUP.  I disabled both yesterday and the system seems to be stable this morning.
I did do what defrancesco had mentioned 2 days ago and still had to reboot the server.

I am going to monitor it for a while.

We're getting the same issue on a terminal 2003 server with only about 10 users and the data stored on a 2nd mirrored drive. I had moved roaming profiles to be local profiles which seems to have helped with the out of resources on login error, but I think it does still occur after the server is running for 4-5 days.

At the moment when a user attempts to open a large PST file from the local data drives gets an access error. If I even try to copy the PST file from the TS server to another server I get "Cannot copy  : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

If I reboot the server it clears the issue for a day or two, then it resurfaces and the user is unable to access their PSTs again and I cannot operate on the files at all.
Sophos gives an "on-access" error as described in
http://technicians-blog.kingcomputer.com.au/index.php/savonaccess-error-trying-to-open-pst-running-sophos/

I'm not clear on what the solution was above. The server is running a symantec backup exec agent and I'm not sure if the overnight backups are causing an out of resources issue when users start trying to access large files in the next day or so.

I have the same problem and am having to reboot the TS servers every morning before any user can logon.  We also run Symantec and I disabled last night to see if it cured the issue and sure enough there was no logon problem this morning. I don't however know why the back ups are resulting in this happening...

Got this Error but I was able to Fixed this by increasing the page file by 1.5 of your total memory.

if you have 12GB of Memory multiply it by 1.5 = 18432

Put the result on both Minimum and Maximum to avoid Paging from increasing.
Warning: Make sure you have available space.

Tools like Poolmon, SigCheck and Strings can help you troubleshoot with Non-Paged and Paged Pool.

imho. it resolve my issue.
