How to "fail" a RAID 1 configuration on embedded Adaptec Controller

Asked by jtreeves72 in Windows 2003 Server, Computer Hard Drives

Good evening Experts - need assistance on methods available to manually "fail" a RAID 1 drive configuration, so that I can expand the disk capacity.

This is on a 2003 Std Ed server which is running two 73GB drives configured in a RAID 1 array. The RAID controller is built into the system board (SuperMicro board) and is running a version of Adaptec HostRAID software.

What I want to do is break the array, pull one of the 73GB drives and replace with a 150GB drive, let the sarray re-build and then pull the remaining 73gb drive and replace with another 150GB drive.

Adaptecs documentation states to prevent any possible data corruption, the drive must be "failed" before pulling a drive from the array, however with this particular OEM (SuperMicro) embedded controller, there is no option to manually fail the drive. I've spoken to Adaptec, they will not assist. They state this is a SuperMicro issue. Trying here before calling SM.

Any recommendations on how best to accomplish what I need to do?  Customer has a backup of data, but it's of the NTBackup flavor. Rather urgent, max points for the assistance. Thank you - Start Free Trial
