DFS Naming problems

Asked by warwolfra in Windows 2003 Server

We have for a very long time had a stand-alone DFS on our primary file server running Server2003. Users have always accessed the DFS by going to \\servername\root

This has proven problematic over time, since if this server is having problems or is offline, no one can access the DFS as it is stand-alone. So we would like to look at moving it to domain-based DFS... however, changing the naming convention is an even bigger problem.

What we would like to do is move to domain-based DFS, but have the address be \\servername\root instead of \\domainname\root. Is it possible to do this? Perhaps with DNS trickery or some other method?
