WSUS server 35GB HDD full - English language only selected

Tags: Microsoft, WSUS, 3 SP1, Installed on Virtual server using VMWare
We have had WSUS 3 SP1 running on Windows 2003 server (Virtual server) for a few months.  I had to resize the HDD on the server a few weeks ago as it had reached its capacity of 20GB.  Now to my horror I see that the 35GB drive is now almost full.

I have no idea what is causing the huge ammount of data that WSUS is storing.  From install English UK only language has bee selected.  I have read that multiple language downloads can cause the HDD to fill up quick but that doesnt apply to us.

I have ran the cleanup wizard within WSUS and managed to claw back a whopping 30MB.

I have also downloaded and ran the WSUS server diagnostic tool using the purgeUnneededFile parameter which freed up 6GB but a day later its back down to 1GB.  To check this I have ran it twice and sure enough a few hours later its at 1GB.

We have multiple groups within WSUS which are setup for the company departments.  Some have updates, others dont.  WSUS doesnt create multiple downloads per group?? If so, this could explain a few things.  I could always minimise this to two or three groups if needs be.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!
