Putting a Windows Server 2003 into the middle of an XP/Vista peer-to-peer network

Asked by fmarshall in Windows 2003 Server, Windows Networking

I have a mid-sized LAN operating in peer-to-peer mode with XP and Vista computers.  No domain, just workgroup.
A vendor needs to install a turnkey system on the LAN and intends to use a Windows Server 2003 with a domain.

I so rarely work with Windows Server systems and never with domain-oriented systems that I'm concerned what will happen when this install takes place.
In order for routers, etc. to work, all of the computers will need to be on the same LAN subnet.

What kinds of issues should I be anticipating?
Can a peer transfer files to the server?  If so, what is entailed?
Can the server transfer files to one of the peers if file sharing on the peers is already set up?
and ... I'm not sure what other questions to ask.  Thus the general question above.Start Free Trial
