The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot Connect to Network Shares

Asked by itcoza in Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft Server, TCP/IP

Hallo All,

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 box that refuses to connect to the other computers in the domain.  It is unable to connect to UNC or IP addresses from the run command line.  You cannot connect to any shares on any computer in the domain.  You cannot list the other computers in the domain using the browser service.  The only meaningful error that I can find in the event viewer is:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      Userenv
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      1030
Date:            2008/09/02
Time:            05:19:38 PM
User:            CCB\mile
Computer:      MILES
Description:
Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      Userenv
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      1058
Date:            2008/09/02
Time:            05:19:38 PM
User:            CCB\mile
Computer:      MILES
Description:
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=ccb,DC=co,DC=za. The file must be present at the location <\\ccb.co.za\sysvol\ccb.co.za\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (The format of the specified network name is invalid. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

These errors all point to the initial problem of not being able to connect to network resources.
All I get when attempting to connect using > Start > Run > \\IP_Address (or computer name) is a small little error window that pops up stating:  \\IP_Address  Incorrect Function.

Your able assistance will be appreciated.

Regards,
M
