Need a WSUS answer - But I don't have access to server

I do maintenance on the local lan for a client who resides in another city.  This LAN connectes to a local NetWare 6.5 fileserver and is part of a larger WAN.

There is a Windows 2003 Software Update server somewhere up the chain and the reg keys to point local workstations is contained in global logon script.

But I am seeing a plethora of Windows Update Agent errors in local Sysem Event logs:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070020: Automatic Updates.  

But when I check with one of their WAN admins, who does have access to the update server, he checks the IP and says the server reports back that IP address I show as
suspect is fine.

I  have not administered a WSUS server for some time, and I can't remember what reporting features it provides. But if he can get a report on the IPs that I say are having problems, that says all is well,  how else do I troubleshoot the problem??  

I verify the machines I see the error on have the correct IP for the WSUS servier in the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate]
 
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update]

I can also ping the WSUS server

I have not been able to verify all machines that process that same logon script have that same error in their system log, but so far I know they do.  Anywhere else I can go with this locally before I go back to WAN admin and say "I can't account for this error locally. I think you need to revist what you are using to verify proper operations."

Duh!  Here's a portion of the update file from this morning. This machine reported the error after boot up, at 8:07:12 AM. It will repeat the error in the system log ever 4 to 5 hours it looks.

This is your problem. The WSUS self update fails. I see if I can dig up a solution...

Hm, check if the NTFS permissions allow access to these files (Administrators and SYSTEM Full access, users read)

Also check if these files have a read-only attribute set
attrib C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups*.dll

To remove it
attrib C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups*.dll -r

What virus scan software is installed? Can you disable the online scan engine?

Symantec Corporate 10.1.5.5000.

But now I am being told that the machines are showing up in WSUS but they have not been "recognized and added" or something to that effect. So, they are acknowledging the problem and looking into it.  There are many machines in the same workgroup that have no problem.  I guess I have done what I can do. Thanks

I'd like to give it to you because you got me on the right track in terms of how to isolate the problem better in my own mind.  I had never deleted the WSUS client before and now I understand the log files a bit better.  Thanks
