Question

Offline file synch issue

Asked by: Freakycat

I have a user that has Wndows XP SP2 with offline files setup on his PC. Just for some background info, the pc is part of a windows 2003 server domain. His My Docs folder is redirected to a network folder and made available offline. For some reason, whenever he creates or changes a document from that folder, those changes are not able to synch with the network folder when his PC goes back online. In fact, once he goes back online, he cannot see those changed or newly created files, because they cannot synch.

I have already tried deleting the local cache and reinitializing it. Unfortunately, the issue returns the first time the user modifies a file offline.  When they return to the office and attempt to synchronize, the files modified while offline are not visible when the computer is running online.  If taken offline, the files are available. There is an error again as there was before stating that files cannot be synchronized that were modified or added while offline.

there is a 2GB limit in the offline file cache by default . Please check this. As a test, you can enable a test folder on the server and enable offline files on it to check any networking issues, and enable folder for offline use on this xp machine.

I checked the user's offline file size and it was less than the 2 GB limit. We have several other users that have offline files setup on the same server and have no issues, which is why this particular case is puzzling. Is it possible for something on the PC itself to become corrupted, other than the cache, that would cause this issue?

How did you reset the cache?  Did you do it through the GUI or with the registry setting in method 2 of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738. I see issues with offline folders and this always sorts it out (with a reboot of course) Then you have to resetup all the folders that the user wants offline and let it do the full sync. (I'm probably telling you everything you know already for which I apolgise) I know that the Client side cache is a per computer thing but do your users have roaming profiles?  Perhaps a server copy of the profile is causing issues?
Is the hard drive on the machine fine?  If it's storing a locally updated version on a dodgy sector of the hard drive it may not be able to read it to resync when back online.

I have only tried resetting the cache with method 1 through the GUI. I will give the second one a try on Monday when I can access the PC. As to your other question, we don't have roaming profiles setup for our users. The HD on the laptop is fine based on diags that I've run on it. I may try setting up a separate folder called offline for him to put his files in, instead of redirecting the My Docs folder to see if that makes any difference also.
