Question

Server Shuts down unexpectedly .

Asked by: bworchel760

For no reason...I have a server that is all of a sudden rebooting for what appears to be no good reason.  Nothing has changed recently and the event log really doesn't show anything.  Some of the original event entries led us to KB937455...which led us to reinstall the SP and do the hotfix...still no luck.

Now all we see is event id of 6008....but nothing before or after that would lead us to a cause.

Any thoughts?

Click Start -> Run

Type the following, and then press enter.

%WINDIR%\Tasks

Do you see any scheduled tasks for a reboot?

Also check that Automatic Updates are not configured for reboot.

Hi there bworchel760,

I know how important the dispatch systems are so I'll try and help if I can, but first we need to get some more info on the conditions surrounding your mysterious system reboots-

Is this a hard reboot (crashes and reboots)? What (if anything) can you see running on the server just prior to the crash?

Can you tell what the internal temps are for the server? What kind of hardware configuration do you have- rack mount or standalone? Does this system have redundant power supplies?

The more info you can provide the better. :)

No, no tasks at all in the list...familiar with a reboot task on other servers, not on this one.

Automatic updates are turned off due to the nature of the server and the CAD system on it.

What type of hardware, such as CPU, Case, Motherboard etc.  I have seen simalair issues on both servers and workstations when the power supply starts to go.  Cheap option for replacing if a workstation.  Could look at testing voltages for the power supply included.  Be sure to go with the ratings on the side of the power supply itself if testing.

Best of luck.

Server is not a rack mount.  It is an HP ML 370 with Xeon 3.4GHz processor and 2GB of ram.  System is RAID 5 with about 350 GB of storage.  If I remember right it does have redundat PS's.  I will have to get temps and stuff like that another time and post.

In addition...it does crash and then dump memory before it reboots.  The reboot is totally random and will happen anywhere between 1 and 3 days.

by: Freaky_FridayPosted on 2008-12-01 at 15:25:59ID: 23073480

If the reboots are so far apart, it *may* be a buffer overflow from one of the programs you have running. I would try keeping an eye on the server and check on the memory & hard disk space from time to time.

You might also want to start a perfmon and save the data off to another networked system.

by: bworchel760Posted on 2008-12-01 at 16:02:31ID: 23073655

Never worked with perfmon, can it be set to just keep running and periodically save to a NAS?

got any quick directions for use?

Sounds like a memory leak. Since this performs a dump, you probably also have an event log error with a stop code and file that is faulty. If not, we will have to get a look at the minidump analysis in order to really pinpoint the error without lucking up on it.

How to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263

Just type in the stop error and faulty file name instead of making everyone download the minidump analysis tool.

Sorry I have not posted this sooner.

We found the issue.  The virus app we WERE using pushed out an upgrade that Windows Server 2003 did not like.  The Virus app was causing the random reboots.

Our support was expiring anyway so it was time to change.  We now have an Enterprise class A/V software running and have Zero issues.

Thanks for all that helped!
