Question

removing common tasks from explorer view

Asked by: Lynx_Tech

I want to remove the links, address bar, buttons ( or maybe customize the buttons) and the folder path shown in the explorer view. Also, to remove the left side folder and file tasks along with the other ways to share or browse.       This way only the share that I create will show it's contents and child objects.

This is only for one user or a group. This is in server 2003 AD. I cannot find anything in GPO.

Where do I start and how do I find these modifications?

login to that particular user and do this

goto start->run->type regedit

and surf to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

there you will find your required entries.

Ah, all great answers.
As I will want to eventually make changes in Internet Explorer, I am really first concerned with the folder view properties.

So I am being more specific to the 'Explorer Folder View' for one user and/or group in 2003 server. The adm is a great way to make it all work. But I am not sure of a 'template' or 'script' that is available.

If I make changes in the registry, how do I do that for a single user?
That's why I thought GPO and adm would be perfect but I am not finding anything specific.

If I were to open a folder, it gives you availability to browse and open other locations on the server. I know there are restrictions via user properties, sharing, and rights. But I want to share one shared folder without all the tasks and views on the left side when opening in the folder view.

Did you import the above adm and try to configure the available options to see if it provides what you are looking for?

by: Lynx_TechPosted on 2009-03-23 at 09:06:58ID: 23959220

I did import the above and enabled it.
Thanks, but I still have the explorer view with the tasks list. I have one user I want to restrict (disallow) most all the functions within the explorer view like file and browser controls.

While I have not found 'exactly' what I was looking for, dstewartjr, has provided a lot of good information. Also in giving me starting points and how to find modifications as I asked in my original question.

The adm was useful in practicing my importing of the script. Though I have not found specifics to disabling the "view" button in the explorer window which leads to folder view and the such to compromise security.

Thanks dstewartjr for you quick and immediate help. Also a thanks to amar31282 for the contribution.

This showed me all the restrictions I have put into place via GPO and most of the information given were variations of that. Though I did pick up some extra information that did not totally apply to my scenario which was very helpful. Thank you!
