Question

VPN setup

Asked by: lcipollone

I have a windows 2003 server network. I have a database that uses a static ip address on 1 NIC. Basically this NIC cannot be touched.
I installed a 2nd NIC but don't know what to do with it yet.
I would like to set up a VPN connection using the second NIC.
Does the 2nd NIC need a static IP address? If it does how do i set it up to.

1st NIC setup:
IP = 192.168.0.50
sub = 255.255.255.0
dg = 192.168.0.1 (router)
dns = 192.168.0.50 (server)
(The server is both DHCP and DNS)

Can someone please give me step by step setup notes
Thanks

Yes, you need to setup the second NIC just like you have above if the server is a DNS server. Make sure you go into the TCP\IP properties of this server click Advanced then click the DNS tab uncheck register this connection with DNS because this will cause the server to have two A records which is a problem for DNS resolution.

Here are three links that are extremely useful.

For SBS 2003

SBS 2003 R2 (like SBS 2003) :

1. Click Start.
2. Open the Server Management console.
3. Highlight the To Do List.
4. Click the Start link for Configure Remote Access (the third step) within Network Tasks.

That comes from a VPN question I asked and had the best experts help with.  Here is the question I asked.  It may be for a SBS 2003 but the steps work for Windows 2003 servers.

You would need to setup your router to forward the VPN request to the server. You don't want to have your server connected to the internet. So, Do you know how to port forward? You must connect to your VPN with an external IP address.

Thank you for your answers but they still do not help me. I literally need a step by step approach to this. I don't know what i'm doing wrong.
Another look at my setup (this might be helpful)

Server 2003
External NIC used for internet and database retreival (main nic)
Static IP: XX.XX.XXX.XXX (internal ip: 192.168.0.50) - cannot use this NIC for anything else
sub = 255.255.255.0
DG = 192.168.1.1 (router)
DNS = 192.168.0.50 (server)
DNS/DHCP = ON

Internal NIC
IP = 192.168.0.51
sub = 255.255.255.0
DG = none
DNS = 192.168.0.51

Running the Remote Access/VPN Server setup wizard
VPN Access and NAT
choose which NIC connects the server to the internet - i chose 192.168.0.51 (internal nic)
automatic DHCP configuration
FINISH

Router (192.168.0.1)
DNS/DHCP = OFF
port forwared (1723) to 192.168.0.51

When trying to connect to VPN server from my workstation at home, i get error 721.
What am I missing?

So, you have two routers?

by: lcipollonePosted on 2009-03-22 at 12:08:13ID: 23952764

i only have one router, do i need 2?

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-03-22 at 12:52:11ID: 23952931

Well you have two different default gateways so that means you have two routers or a router that can handle two different internal gateways.

by: lcipollonePosted on 2009-03-22 at 14:08:22ID: 23953254

I only have 1 default gateway which is my router and can only handle 1.
I'm trying again and now I'm getting an error code 721. It is stuck at "verifying username & password"
I feel that i'm doing something wrong with the NICs

Internet NIC
IP = 192.168.0.50 (SERVER)
SUB = 255.255.255.0
DG = 192.168.0.1 (ROUTER)
DNS = 192.168.0.50 (SERVER IS BOTH DNS/DHCP SERVER)

2ND NIC (INTERNAL NIC)
IP = 192.168.0.51
SUB = 255.255.255.0
all else is left blank.

On the router i forwarded ports 1723 and 47
In RRAS I set up the IP of the 2nd NIC 192.168.0.52
Is all of this correct? Can someone please help........

by: lcipollonePosted on 2009-03-22 at 14:53:16ID: 23953501

Never mind it worked.
I have to forward all of these ports in my router to the internal NIC (2nd NIC)
1723
47
1701
500
50-51

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-03-23 at 06:45:06ID: 23957526

The reason I thought you had two default gateways was that in one of your post you listed the 192.168.1.1 as a default gateway.
