Question

NTBackup: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x8007000e.

Asked by: Ecogeek

Hello EE.

First of all let me say this is my first post, I'm not accustomed to posting on EE yet, so apologies if I don't follow etiquette.

I have a problem with NTBackup. There are Event log messages leading up to the Scheduled NTBackup task which would indicate that the Volume Shadow Copy Creation process attempts to run, but then fails (see code section which I've annotated).

I've already observed:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/2003_Server/Q_22595852.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+0x8007000e+10+copi+creat+error+ntbackup+return+shadow+volum+while

...but I'm not sure if it applies to my situation.

NTBackups have been working fine until the morning of April 1st (I considered it to be an April Fools trick, but unfortunately not). April 2nd is here and it's still doing the same.

It might be worth noting that I can run a backup during the day absolutely fine, did so yesterday, and am doing so today.

Some hardware details:
Dual Xeon 2.8GHz
1 GB RAM
C: 19.5GB (10.8GB Available)
D: 48.2GB (17.7GB Available)

Some version information:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition /w Service Pack 2

The command that is run:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Backup_Jobs\DAILY-BACKUP.bks" /J "DAILY BACKUP" /D "DAILY-BACKUP SET" /F "Z:\*OURSERVERNAME*\DAILY-BACKUP.BKF" /V:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:off /L:s /M normal

* I've modified the above for our security!

If there's any more information you require in order to diagnose, please ask as I will be only too grateful to get this issue resolved ASAP. I'm afraid I'm more accustomed to Linux than Windows server technology and this is a system I've inherited, not created from scratch, so you might have to do some handholding along the way!!!!

Thanks and Regards,

Daniel.

The backup seems to have fixed itself today, which I appreciate is of no use to anyone reading this article with the same problem.

However, I'm going to attempt to install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940239 hotfix as suggested by speshalyst and restart the server tonight when the users have gone home.

I will leave the post open for a week and report back on whether the problem has re-occured during that timeframe.

It's not reoccured and I'm happy with fix 940239. I suspect had I applied this sooner it would have solved the problem.

Thanks speshalyst!!

Daniel.
