The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Homebrew Password Reset - Server Connection Fails?

Asked by e_sandrs in Windows 2003 Server, C Programming Language

We have a web based password reset program that has stopped working for us.  We think we have mostly tracked down the problem to the small C program running on one of the DC's (Win2k3 SP2) which is supposed to pass the change information between the web server and AD.

Here's what we know today.  If we take the listener EXE and run it from the command line it works fine - it sits nicely running and remote webserver commands can be passed to it and seen executing.  Of course, we want it to run as a service - so we used INSTSRV.EXE and SRVANY.EXE to set up a service to keep the listener running.  Once we do that, it stops working.

If we stop the service and try rerunning the EXE that used to work from the command line it endlessly scrolls the "Failed to accept client connection" error reporting from the code listed below (full, semi-sanitized, code attached) and doesn't run remote commands anymore.

- We've tried running both the EXE and the service as various administrators and as Local Service with no effect.

- We tried turning off local Symantec Antivirus File Protection in case it was interpreting the activity as viral and eventually uninstalled Symantec - still broken.

This program was working for several years.  The only changes we know of that could have caused it to stop is:

1) [March] Windows updates (applied several weeks before we know it stopped working).
2) Turning on a Domain Policy password age limit (currently off, and it still doesn't work).

I think this is some kind of case of Windows protecting itself - but I don't know what we can do to allow this desired application.  Any ideas - brilliant or otherwise, will be gladly tested!  As noted our web pages run using Apache/PHP and need to talk to our Win2k3 SP2 AD domain.  Even if you have some significantly different method of handling these off-site password changes, we'll at least consider them.

That's enough for round 1 - ask for other details as needed, Thanks!
