The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Brand new sbs 2003 server, unable to ping server in am had to reboot server to fix

Asked by FASTECHS in Windows 2003 Server, SBS Small Business Server

This morning none of our computers could connect to our brand new sbs 2003 server. I went onto the sbs server and it was ok, no bluescreens or error messages; however, when I right clicked on the network adapter and went to properties I noticed it had received a bunch of packets but sent was 0. On all of our client computers we could not ping the server. I litterally didn't do anything but reboot the server and we were all back up and running. The server is running a realtek PCI gigabit ethernet card. The switch was working well. I am just very confused as to what coudl be causing this. The only thing in the adapter that I subsequently turned off was "allow this computer to turn of this device to save power". Not sure if that was what is the cause but will have to wait and see. It is just a pain to have to every morning reboot the computers or the server.   The only messages in my event log that I am getting are as follows:

Description:
DNS server has updated its own host (A) records.  In order to ensure that its DS-integrated peer DNS servers are able to replicate with this server, an attempt was made to update them with the new records through dynamic update.  An error was encountered during this update, the record data is the error code.

If this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error
should be ignored.

If this DNS server's Active Directory replication partners do not have the correct IP address(es) for this server, they will be unable to replicate with it.

To ensure proper replication:
1) Find this server's Active Directory replication partners that run the DNS server.
2) Open DnsManager and connect in turn to each of the replication partners.
3) On each server, check the host (A record) registration for THIS server.
4) Delete any A records that do NOT correspond to IP addresses of this server.
5) If there are no A records for this server, add at least one A record corresponding to an address on this server, that the replication partner can contact.  (In other words, if there multiple IP addresses for this DNS server, add at least one that is on the same network as the Active Directory DNS server you are updating.)
6) Note, that is not necessary to update EVERY replication partner.  It is only necessary that the records are fixed up on enough replication partners so that every server that replicates with this server will receive (through replication) the new data.

I did notice that at one point my ip address was changed during the new server setup from 192.168.3.x to 10.0.0.x and that some old records in dns are still there. Is there a way to completely reset the dns server in sbs to default?
