Question

SBS 2003 server in big trouble after a Peachtree & Quickbooks Installation

Asked by: tjmustang

We have a SBS 2003 server that had SP1 on it and everything worked fine, Exchange, Quickbooks Server Edition, Peachtree Server Edition, Public folders & email in Exchange.  All the sudden Peachtree hung up on all four client computers.  We did a hard shut down on the clients and removed Peachtree from each client and the SBS 2003 server.  We then put Peachtree back on the server and the clients.  Peachtree now works but lots of new problems.  Exchange will not mount the stores and many error messages in the even logs.  I noticed DCPromo errors during the time Peachtree was being removed and put back on the SBS 2003 server.

The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance.
The MAPI provider failed.

Did you remove this server from the domain or use dcpromo on it in anyway? Dc promo events are usually seen when a server has been promoted into or removed from your AD domain. If this has happened to the machine your exchange server is on it can cause tons of issues with not only exchange but other services also. Exchange is heavily integrated into AD. If this is the case my suggestion would be to drop the $250 on an MS support call, it will be worth it in that situation. Most of the time the database can be saved ok but they may have you do a fresh install of exchange itself.

Check these first....
Make sure all of your exchange services are started.
Schedule a full check disk for you machine and let it run.

Yep, we are fixin to drop the $245 to MS....it's $250 now?  Nobody did DCPRO and that is what concerns me as "something" did.  I am Guessing Peachtree software installation or the "Pervasive Peachtree server components".  I am not liking the whole situation as many errors point to DNS and SA account issues.

by: BillBachPosted on 2009-06-15 at 06:34:02ID: 24628606

I can guiarantee that the Pervasive database engine had nothing to do with the DCPROMO.  I agree with Diesel79 that a flaky HDD may be to blame here, so a complete ChkDsk is a good starting point.

Called MS and they fixed it in 3 hours.  Thanks for your help.  Disk was fine.

Sounds great!  By the way, the second point of Experts Exchange is to offer a repository for problems so that people looking for information in the future can benefit from the issues that we have fixed in the past.  If possible, please post the root cause of the problem, along with the solution.  if the solution was some special magic via internal Microsoft tools, then it would be helpful to know that, too.  That way, in the future, if someone runs across this thread, they'll know not to waste time on any of the other stuff.

PROBLEM

=========

"Mailbox store won't mount on exchange server"

RESOLUTION

====================

*          Issue store not mounting on server PDC01

*          Issue started   after the server was rebooted

*          Checked the health of the data base for private and public store
it was clean shutdown

*          We moved all the log files and chk files to a different folder

*          Then we checked the application log we found

*          Event ID 9518 Source MSExchangeSA

*          Error 0xfffffbf8 starting Storage Group

*          /DC=ORG/DC=NIFS/CN=CONFIGURATION/CN=SERVICES/CN=MICROSOFT

*          EXCHANGE/CN=NIFS/CN=ADMINISTRATIVE GROUPS/CN=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE

*          GROUP/CN=SERVERS/CN=NIFSMAIN/CN=INFORMATIONSTORE/CN=FIRST STORAGE
GROUP on the

*          Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

*          Then we created the everyone group and gave full permission

*          Then we mounted the store it mounted

*          Checked the mail flow it was fine

*          Gave  value add we set the db limit

*
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\Server
name\Private-Mailbox Store GUID

*          DWORD Value: Database Size Limit in Gb

*          Modify: Click Decimal, and then type 50 in the Value data box

*          Then we checked the event id 1216 to check the changes we made

*          We also added the folders for antivirus exclusion (Inetsrv,
Inetpub Exchsrv

Note: Few things to be observed and taken care

1.        Always take Full backup of the Exchange server on regular basis.

2.        Also take backup of the System State data of your server. It would
be helpful in disaster recovery scenarios.

3.        Always set the exclusions on the Antivirus software for Exchange
files and folders. Exclude the .edb,stm.log file and .chk files from
scanning

4.        Never install Third part Addins such as Google desktop..on the
client machine, it would cause problems to the exchange server.

5.        Always ask users to delete unwanted emails from outlook or import
old emails  in PST so that it can keep the mailbox size small.

Awesome! Glad MS was able to help out. Sometimes it is just worth it to deal with accents and put up the $249 for a speedy resolution.
