This post is unhelpfully I also found this when googling! It concerns using DNS to merge many "old" print servers onto one host. My Question was different.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsWe use DNS aliasing to our print server.
print.my.org > sv019.my.org
This works fine and our users only need know that they connect to print for mapping print servers. and if we need to replace a server the end user experience remains. However when we add printers to the server it registers them in the active directory under the machines netbios name (sv019) this means that if a user browses to the printer through ad it get's maped to the machine and not the dns alised address of the machine.
Is there any way to register printers in AD against the DNS aliased name?

No you misunderstand, I want to be able to publish through the Active directory.as the DNS alias not the Machine Name.
I fully understand what that article is sugesting but that is not a resolution to my problem. If you try this out you will find that after you have migrated the print queues the entries woud be published in AD under the server sv019 not the print dns alias.
Once again, I fully understand the solution ad it does not resolve me issue!

Though it does involve using ADSI edit, so be very careful if you attempt it. :)
Pete
both the machine (sv019) and the Alias (print) have valid DNS entries, the machine has a valid A and PTR record and the alias a valid CNAME record.
Given that we have a large number of printers in the organisation I think I will be scripting the AD update. However I have now tested using ADSIedit and all is well.
