Question

Event ID 13042 - Self-update is not working. (WSUS)

Asked by: laurin1

WSUS server seems to be working fine, still, but about 3 weeks ago, the events started:

13042 - Self-update is not working.
12002 - The Reporting Web Service is not working.
12032 - The Server Synchronization Web Service is not working.
12022 - The Client Web Service is not working.
12042 - The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working.
12052 - The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working.

I've had the 13042 before (different server, resolved it.) I've read many posts and tried lots of different things. Cannot resolve this.

Probably not related, but also get this one:

5050 - The description for Event ID ( 5050 ) in Source ( IAS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: dc04.pridedallas.com, PRIDEDALLAS.

Can the computer connect to Microsoft's website to update the server?
make sure WSUS is running on Domain Admin user )update the services)
check this http://eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=13042&eventno=8857&source=Windows%20Server%20Update%20Services&phase=1

  1. Yes, it can connect to the site. We are still getting updates
  2. You mean run the service as a domain admin? no way. It never has needed that before. I tried this just to test, and does not fix the problem.
  3. Followed everything on that page already.

Tried everything but that last item, but I don't understand how to do that one. Some of the stuff it refers to is outdated and incorrect. Updated my VD's to match the link it refers to on MS's site.

All of the site errors are gone, but I still get:

13042 - Self-update is not working.

And I now get an additional error:

10032 - The server is failing to download some updates.

by: laurin1Posted on 2009-08-18 at 09:34:24ID: 25125021

Changed the service back to Network Service (changed it for testing.) Core error is gone, but still getting the Self-update error.

by: laurin1Posted on 2009-08-18 at 10:08:54ID: 25125326

Now all the original errors have returned.

by: laurin1Posted on 2009-08-18 at 10:10:24ID: 25125341

Deleted the IUSR_ account, reset iis, now all error except the 13042 are gone again.

Followed these directions and it's working!

1. Within IIS verify that anonymous access is enabled for the /selfupdate
virtual directory and /clientwebservice application directory.
2. Reset the password of the IIS anonymous account IUSER_<computer> and
renew the password setting in IIS:
a. Open up IIS
b. Expand Web Sites > Right click SelfUpdate > Properties > Directory
Security tab
c. Click Edit on "Authentication and access control"
d. Enter the same password that was used to reset the IUSER account in AD
Users & Computers
e. Do the same with the below IIS componets :
ReportingWebService / ServerSynchronizationWebService / ClientWebService /
SimpleAuthWebService / DSSAuthenticationWebService
f. If you are using the Default Web site, you should also check the
password setting in it.
