Upgrading server from 2003 to 2008r2

If I start the procedure of in-place upgrade from server 2003 to 2008 by doing the adprep /forestprep, adprep /domainprep, adprep /domainprep /gpprep and start the upgrade by inserting the DVD but later find out I do not meet compatibility requirements, can I cancel the procedure and leave the domain and forest prep'ed or will the preps hinder my old domain?  Also, if I do the preps as indicated above and have a problem with my server upgrade, can I just revert to a saved server image and not have to worry about it?  Is DFS impacted?

prep won't damage the old domain. no one said it has to be done X time prior to upgrade and no one is counting down on you
as for compatibility, check the windows server catalog and verify your hardware is good enough before you start: http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/
there is no sense in starting a process if you think it will fail

The hardware is new last year and I am sure it will be compatible but I need to look at contigincies if not; you understand.  It is a new IBM Xseries 3650.  Thanks for the info.  It is good to know I can do the domain and forest preps and commit to DC upgrade later if needed.
