I am going to be putting in a new motherboard with a Quad-Core processor (previous is a dual core). I have Windows Server Enterprise 2003. Will running windows repair also work for this setup?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsWe have a Windows 2003 server domain network. The server motherboard is really flaky. I want to replace the motherboard with a new one, but keep the same domain, and just move over the hard drives. Is this possible? Please in detail explain how i can make this happen without running into problems, because configuring each and every computer again on a new domain would be a HUGE pain.
Thank you!

Create backup image of exiting drives (system and data partitions) using Paragon Drive Backup 9.0 Server Edition: www.drive-backup.com It comes with Adaptive Restore free addon.
Then replace the motherboard with CPU and connect old drives to it.
After that boot the server from Adaptive Restore WinPE Recovery CD - load drivers first for chipset so to detect it properly.
When drivers loaded run P2P wizard - Adjust OS. Next step will allow you installing chipset and network drivers if you need.
Restart the server and get to Windows. Install there all other drivers (video, audio etc) and go on with your domain.
I have moved production server to new hardware already using this Adaptive Restore tool myself.

Swapping the motherboard for a new one of the same type won't cause you any issues at all, as the OS will never notice the difference. If you swap the board with a board of a different type you will run into some minor issues that are easily overcome, you will just need to run a repair on Windows.
