Question

Where is the drive array controller usually located?

Hello experts,

After a long day of troubleshooting, I was told that the drive array controller had a hard failure and one drive is bad. The question I am asking to myself is why didn't I notice that in the first place? Well, may be because I didn't know about drive array controller....

Do any of you experts know where this is located? The system has 16 slots, 8 in top chassis and 8 in the bottom.

Many times the drive array controller is located on the controller card itself, or on the chassis' mainboard.  I would suggest getting the technical docs for the unit and looking there.

What type of device is in question?

You can try run a array diagnostic provided by the server manufacturer i.e HP, IBM or Dell and form there you will know the root cause of the problem. Sometimes, a firmware upgrade can help you to fix the problem but a faulty HDD which attached to the array controller still need to be replaced.

can this drive array controller be managed from Win2003 server? can the array diagnostic be ran from Win2003 server?
What would the name of the program be?

The name of the manufacture is HP.

thx.. and my apologies for being vague... I just rather ask in the background before I face my team.

Most-likely yes, HP has to make such a utility (it would be foolish if they did not).  We use Dell and Mac servers here, which have similar utilities.  I can't imagine HP not offering a similar capability to be competitive.
