Question

Move DNS/WINS WIndows Server 2003

Asked by: estanton

The short story: I wnat to move DNS from a 32 bit WS 2003 to 64 bit WS 2003.

Originally DC, DHCP, WINS, DNS ( only one in domain ) were running on a 32 bit 2003 WS. After a lot of work and help from the experts I have moved everything except DNS and WINS to a new 64 bit 2003 WS.
I have installed DNS and WINS to the new server, and because it is the DC I half expected everying to magically show up. No magic. I believe all the DNS information should be there somewhere because it is the DC and was migrated to from the DC that had the companies DNS on it.
My plan is to run the two in tandem then make the changes to the equipment in the domain, then remove DNS/WINS from the old server.
What is the best way to accomplish this?

If you are using AD Integrated DNS then you first need to add the 64bit machine as an additional DC in your existing domain and make it point at the old DC for its DNS. Once that's done you can install DNS on the new machine, DNS should then replicate to the new machine and once it has then you should be bale to point the new machine to itself for DNS. Wins is similar, though the machine does not need to be a DC, the default is for WINS to automatically set up its replication topology. Once all is ok then you can remove DNS?WINS from the old machine after having made sure that all clients look to the new mackine for DNS/WINS

How do I check to see I am using AD integrated DNS? The new machine is the primary DC right now. How do I make it point to the old machine for it's DNS? It is currently uses the old server for DNS ( it is listed as the DNS server in the TCP/IP properties in the local area connection.

AD integrated is the default On the current DNS server, start DNS Manager.
Right-click the DNS zone, click Properties, it should say Active Directory Integrated

To set which machine it uses for DNS set the Preferred DNS server option in the TCP/IP properties - as you suggest.

Note if your clients are using DHCP then you will need to change the DNS server option in the DCHP options to point to the new DNS server.

The current DNS server and old Primary DC is not using AD integrated DNS. It would seem I can change this, but what will this do if I make the switch while users / equipment need the DNS server? Should I do it after hours?

by: KCTSPosted on 2009-10-21 at 08:28:03ID: 25624937

It will not make any difference to users - there is no harm in doing it now.

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-21 at 08:28:32ID: 25624945

I take part of that back. The new server is using AD integrated DNS.

by: KCTSPosted on 2009-10-21 at 08:28:51ID: 25624950

once its make sure the other DC is DNS AD Integrated and sit back and wait...

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-21 at 08:31:45ID: 25624988

I made the changes. Now I just wait for replication.

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-21 at 08:42:56ID: 25625116

Looks like replication is done. The forwarders did not come over. I am assuming I will need to add those manually. Is there anything else I might be missing that will not replicate?

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-10-21 at 10:13:31ID: 25626045

DNS Forwarders are the one thing you must configure on each DNS server.

by: KCTSPosted on 2009-10-21 at 10:14:57ID: 25626059

Indeed - you will need to manually add forwarders on the new server

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-21 at 14:28:03ID: 25628700

Made all the server changes. Going to finish up with clients tomorrow.
