Question

Intégration Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise in existing 2003 domain

Asked by: Leonard_MOR

Hi,
Am required to integrate a new Intranet server into an existing Windows Server 2003 domain.
Because of the memory requirements for the Intranet 32 bits application (8Gb) we are going the 2003 R2 Enterprise version route since this seems to be the only option available to get over the 4Gb RAM limit of the Standard version. The application has not been certified 64 bits.
Since I have never installed the Enterprise version, my question to the experts is are there any pitfalls installing an Entreprise version in an existing domain where all of the existing servers are either 2003 or 2003 R2 32 bits ? The primary AD controller uses 2003 R2 Standard.
Have looked at the comparaison of the technical characteristics of the various 2003 versions but there is nothing concerning the mixing of the versions.
Don't anticipate any problems but you never know.

Prefer replies from those who have actually installed an Enterprise version.

Finally, because of the cost of the OEM Enterprise edition (which comes with 25 x CAL's), and since I don't need any CAL's, I'm planning to get an Open licence for a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and downgrade to Server 2003 R2 Enterprise. Any problems with this option ?

Regards

If your domain controller is R2 then the domain is already an R2 domain.

The type of Domain only comes into account if you are planning on making this server a domain controller.

You can mix and match as much as you like with standard/enterprise/32bit/64bit it really makes no difference.

There should be no problems at all. EE behaves just like Standard, it only offers more functionality (and, yes, I've installed more than one EE into a W2k3 AD).
The OLP licenses usually are downgradable, but the only ones who can give you reliable answer are Microsoft; the licensing conditions change all the time.

Sorry missed the last part of your question.

There is also no reason why you cannot add a Windows 2008 member server to your 2003 Domain, if you wanted to make it a domain controller you would need to run adprep /forestprep first.

Oh, and since you've never installed EE before, maybe noteworty, too: unless the server has hotpluggable memory, you need to add the /PAE option in the boot.ini.
I'd recommend to duplicate the existing entry under [operating systems], then add /PAE to the first entry.
This way, the machine will by default start with /PAE, but you'll still have the option of booting without it (I've seen machines not booting with /PAE anymore, and the fallback is way easier if you can just pick it in the boot menu ...)
